Squirrels, hillku, Jalisco, non-crosswalk at 14th and Aloha, coyotes, Wax On and Route #10 are in. The victor of this neighborhood battle of deliciousness will advance with the other winners into Round 2 and, perhaps, continue its march to the finals.
It wasn’t easy to select these representatives of the great food available in the neighborhood. As usual, we went with sexiness. Not everybody loves Smith‘s rich hor’ dourves but everybody who does loves them hardcore. On the other plate, Volunteer Park Cafe has tummies panging for breakfast visits to the north end of the ‘hood. What better item to represent VPC than the patience inspiring waffle — only one griddle, so only one waffle at a time.

oh yeah, a quick note on our polling service. We were hoping to go with polldaddy but, gulp, they want 100 bucks for the vote volume we’ll likely generate this year. So we’re going with this freebie service that allows us to schedule an end to voting.
I can’t honestly say that I want to have to register to decide between squirrels and coyotes!
And (having just railed against anonymity), anonymous voting is kind of ingrained into us.
Some of the voting systems you tried out on us managed to prevent vote stuffing without asking you to register, presumably via IP addresses. I guess they all cost money.

Click skip then, friend
In Capitol hill, 2007 was definitely the year of the… Coyote!
I can’t wait to see the next category!
Poll lets your register or vote as a “guest”.
Only ~ 25% of the votes for squirrels are by guests but ~ 75% of those for coyotes are by guests.
There is a deep sociological truth here. I just don’t know what it is.

It says:
“Make your vote count more…”
huh?
Bad marketing text. They want you to register and leave comments, etc. If anybody wants to code us a better solution, you know where to find us!
It’s still Wednesday as far as I can tell, but when I click on the poll, it says the status is “closed”.
Starting to remember why I said I wasn’t going to do this again this year. SIGH. Turns out, the poll service is on GMT so poll has closed earlier than I wanted. Toluna lets you choose 1, 3, 5 or 10 day polls but the definition of ‘day’ is really date based. Very lame. Anyhow. Let me noodle on how to proceed. Possible we’ll just go with the results and move on with manual closing of polls so no more surprises. Possible we’ll add a bonus vote to clear this up. Stay tuned.
No way that coyotes lose to squirrels, let alone by such a large margin. Is “Toluna” Latin for “fluffy-tailed nut eater,” by any chance?
I demand a rematch.
would love to know gender break-down on this one! :)
True but we’ve seen a few ladies at Jim’s and gents at Wax On.
they should have called it “Wax Off!” Or is that implied? Miyagi-san would know.
Jim won’t cut ladies’ hair. He’s licensed only for boys and men. I found this out when I was trying to get a quick cut for my then-young daughter. No was the word.
Well, I’m pretty sure she was a lady. Don’t want to get anybody in trouble here but is the whole license thing really possible? Does WA state really only license somebody for one gender? Perhaps he gets his license elsewhere.
I hope Jim’s makes it far in this thing. There aren’t many old school barber shops left. And don’t tell me about Rudy’s… that place is a poser.
The results of this one would have made Almost Live’s Lame List.
It is both the beauty and the flaw that nobody is required to explain their vote.
Other disturbing things about this poll:
o pffft’s interest in it
o joannie’s story
o number of votes
As your official Capitol Hillian about to move to France (back to Capitol Hill in 2009, though), I have to quibble with your spelling of “hors d’oeuvres.” ;)
When the world is truly Unicode and not some post-ASCII quasi-Unicode world, I’ll even squish the ‘o’ and ‘e’ into a single letter.
Thanks O’CHAMF. That’s why we keep you around.
But the real question is: cheese filled dates or waffles?
