Consuming Earth Day on Capitol Hill

Yay, even consumption is “green” these days. As you’ve no doubt noted thanks to the green logos on all the TV channels, tomorrow is Earth Day. If you haven’t already planted a tree or torn out some invasive blackberries there is still time. Even better, tell your boss that you don’t feel right about commuting on Earth Day and need to work from home. It only counts if you keep the lights and the heat off. Or share lights and heat with others at Victrola or Fuel. And don’t go on the Internet.

If you want to venture outside and off the Hill, go to the baseball game. On Tuesday the Mariners’ game is carbon-neutral. This includes offsetting the umpires’ travel emissions and the hotel stays of the Orioles.

On Wednesday you can make your biggest carbon-saving impact — by not traveling to Europe. Instead, go to the Beaujolais wine dinner at Monsoon. Or you can try out Coastal’s new speciality menu that starts on Wednesday – Rome. The main thing we remember eating in Rome is gelato. Piles and piles of delicious gelato. Presumably Coastal will be more wide ranging and throw in a pasta or two.
