Capitol Hill Block Party: Neither block, nor party

Facts is facts. The Capitol Hill Block Party is neither a block nor a party.

It is a big swath of Pike/Pine cut off by chain-link fences and big sweaty security dudes. Discuss.

It’s totally a party. A party with chain-link fences and big sweaty security dudes! What you might want to try this year is hanging out at the smaller stages — way more fun than the mob scene at the main one. Local hiphop ftw

I can’t stand it. It’s noisy, obnoxious, and they never properly clean up afterwards.

sure, my whole life is a party, but this one definitely counts, even with the controlled environment.

I’m a music fan and I like to party…But seriously, the Block Party has become such a monstrosity, I’ve avoided it for years.
Who wants to pay $18 for the opportunity to be assaulted by loud talentless bands and to be surrounded by thousands of sweaty drunk idiots? What do you expect, it’s the Stranger’s version of Bumbershoot. If that’s your idea of a good time, knock yourself out. I’m looking forward to the Georgetown music festival myself, I was there last year and it was great.

I don’t know: I guess it stretches down 10th and 11th some, but it mostly looks like a block on this map. And I definitely don’t see Pine St. . . .

I’m just sayin’.

I don’t think the block party is what it used to be and I think the music dominates at the expense of other arts and features, but I’m a music fan, I dig the line up and will GLADLY pay $18 for a day’s worth of music. The price is a steal and I love seeing that many great local bands so close to home. AND Les Savy Fav are one of the best live bands I’ve seen in many, many years. To each his/her own. I’m all for it and hope to see it continue for the long haul!

We had to cancel the opening weekend of our next theatrical presentation when we realized we’d be competing with all three CHBP states aimed directly at our venue on the corner of 11th & E. Pike. We’ve been in the location just under a year, and were in the process of cleaning out 28 years of accumulated detritus left by the previous tenants during last year’s Block Party, so it wasn’t really on our radar screen this year.

Obviously, we’ll know better next year, but still, it certainly seems the Block Party is less about “art” (music excepted), seeing as it completely ignores, not to mention actively disrupts access to the various galleries, clubs, and theatres in the affected area, and rather seems to be more about – well, what exactly I’m not sure. Promoting The Stranger? The bands? The sponsors?

Anyway, I’ll be watching a bit of it from our fire-escape conveniently located above the hoi-polloi, where I can listen to anything of interest without paying the $18 cover charge or $6 for a pint of PBR.
