Rash of car break-ins in Miller Park begs an interesting question — what’s your strategy for preventing auto break-ins? And, if you don’t lock, let us know what kind of car you drive, what’s on your auto Ipod and where you park. We have errands we need to run.

Our strategy is that we keep the cars locked, but they are completely clean — you cannot see anything to steal if you look in the car. Both of our cars also have their factory stereos which are harder to steal than after market systems.
We have had one car break-in in the 7 years we’ve lived in the area (about 5 years ago). In that case, we’d left CDs and car chargers out and visible. The thief got the CDs, car chargers, and our after market stereo.
If you have an older car, you know that it’s ridiculously easy to jimmy the lock. The best strategy is to keep nothing important in your car, even in the glove box (my friend recently had his iphone stolen from the glove box while he was at the park!). There were a few weeks this spring when I was concerned that someone would siphon my gas tank, but other than that I don’t lose sleep over possible car theft — the only reason someone would break into my beater is if they needed a thrill, in which case there’s nothing I can do about it anyway.
We NEVER keep anything of value in our cars anymore, but the windows get broken anyway (and the thief ran off with the manuals for the 15 year old car and the stereo!).
Many, many years ago, we were parked near Myrtle Edwards and a thief broke a window and ran off with our diaper bag! It is one of my life’s great regrets that the diaper bag only contained wet diapers and not “ripe” ones! [How long ago? The diaper user is now in graduate school]
BTW: I’m now good at changing car glass!
I would actually mind it less if someone broke into my car and stole it. I hate the vandalism more (keying my car, smashing the windows with a rock, etc). You end up having to pay $300 or $500 to get it fixed, and the “miscreant” gets nothing but a cheap thrill with no costs.
Our car was broken into last Monday night but we are over by Prospect and 23rd. We left the doors open by accident which is something we almost never do. Bad luck for us I guess considering the car has a fancy alarm on normally. Another neighbors car had their car window smashed in tho same night. IS there a link to news about the Miller breakins? I’m wondering if there is a connection.
Remember when hardcore environmentalists would vandalize Hummers or even set them on fire? Cars are the new hummers.
