ACLU & artist partner against surveillance cams

I’d love to see these guys in Cal Anderson at some point… Kudos to whoever gets the first non-PR photo of them creeping people out.

I also saw (what I thought was) an art installation of (what I thought were) about 30 tiny surveillance cameras on sticks, about head height, each would swivel every 10 seconds or so. I thought they were pretty effective and they were definitely in a visible location with a lot of people around. It was in the little public area on the 2nd ave side of Benaroya Hall downtown. I didn’t stop so I didn’t really get a good look but I’m pretty sure that’s what they were.

Anyone else see this?

Why not have an initiave to stop these cameras… Heck if that Tim idiot from E. WA can have an initiative everytime he feels like it why can’t we?

Actually, that was in Cal Anderson Park! ACLU of Washington was there handing out flyers. More pictures are online here: http://www.aclu-wa.org/detail.cfm?id=895
Write to the Seattle City Council about it here: http://action.aclu-wa.org

One of my counterparts on the council is looking into taking some kind of action against the cameras but I’m not sure it will fly. You can read more about Charlette’s thoughts here. Not sure what status of her proposal is but you should come to the next council meeting on Thursday night if you are interested.

I saw those little guys too. They reminded me of Short Circuit for some reason. :)
