QFC is expanding the self-service checkstands from 8 to 12. It looks like they removed a few regular lanes to make room. I always wonder if people lose jobs when this happens, but at least the new configuration has 2 employees watching 12 stands, while the old one had 1 employee watching 8.
On a personal note, I have a love-hate relationship with these things. They usually get you out the door faster, but they’re a pain to use if you want paper bags, because it feels the weight and throws an alert because it thinks you put something up there without scanning it. Couldn’t they have a barcode on the paper bags with a price of free? Also, when you need the attention of the employee to fix this or to check your ID when buying alcohol, it seems they are always distracted and I end up feeling impatient. They should have a bell you can ring.
Yes, I have reusable bags, but I use the paper ones for trash, so I am hoarding them until the bag fee starts. Anyone else doing this?
I feel like this QFC gets short shrift in the Capitol Hill QFC landscape. Glad you gave it its moment in the sun.
I can’t wait for the day when robots rule the earth and rub our tired ol’ feets.

Set your bags on the bagging counter before you start ringing up your items. It will tare it for you, or ask the attendant to do it for you.

We’re losing neighborhood jobs and human contact. I have stopped using the self-checkouts. I urge others to consider doing the same. Cashiers will thank you.

I can’t stand those f-ing things. They never work. They’re a waste of time. You don’t get a discount for doing it yourself so why bother? YES people lose jobs because of them. Take a moment to interact with a live human being. You’ll be a better person for it.
