Hillside Quickie family suffers loss: Fire destroys Tacoma market

A vicious fire has gutted the center of the Hillside Quickie family of businesses. 60 firefighters battled the blaze during Monday afternoon’s soaring temperatures as flames consumed Tacoma’s Hillside Quickie market at 1602 S G St. Nobody was injured.

The market is operated by Niombi Howell, mother of Makini Howell, the driving force behind Seattle’s Hillside Quickie on 15th Ave and the new vegan bistro Plum on 12th. Niombi told KING 5 that the market is “the main supply chain location” for the families businesses in Seattle and Tacoma.

Only two walls of the once-colorful 120-year-old building were left standing. Fire investigators have yet to determine a cause.
