Wowee, zowee: Broadway’s light rail construction zone capped by pavement

Photo: Lucas Anderson, Neighborlogs

So, what *will* you do with three acres of open asphalt on Broadway? The Capitol Hill light rail station construction area is finally capped with this oily layer awaiting the next phase of construction in early 2010. In the meantime, we’re told Sound Transit is planning some kind of groundbreaking party in mid-September and another art project involving the chain-link security fence.

We’re checking with Sound Transit to see if they have any other community uses planned for the newly paved space.

I guess the title says it all, but, perfect location, something for 5,000 people … THE RED AND WHITE PARTY …. shades of the past where a giant party with that theme was a blast at the old Broadway market. (Long before QFC drab and dreary)

Will CHS be a sponsor? Will Sound be smart and let such uses take place before the equipment gets installed? Questions and more questions.

I walked passed it the other day, you can see Mt Rainier from Dicks Drive-in now.

it took all of my willpower yesterday to keep myself from putting on my roller skates and skating like it’s 1988. seriously. all my willpower.

The ideas are rampant .. and fun.

Roller girls galore, and retro theme and street gear and garb.

And the Wurlitzer music at some point … hey let’s go way back.

I’m talking to ST about the lot to get some more info. I’ll ask about what it will take to put the space to use for something like this.

I was going to say somebody tell Keith Harris, but he’s already on it. Because he’s an open space badass.

So, this is just going to sit there until early 2010? No wonder public works projects take so long and cost so much. Why don’t they get off their ass and start now?

Not sure but it might be because they have to wait for the I-5 undercrossing work to complete before they can start tunneling through

Yah, i was also curious why they had to vacate everything months before demo work and demo everything 2 years before even doing anything with the site…
If it were a giant roller skating rink until 2010, I think I’d be happy. Happy for sure if it were free. Or! We could take donations to keep Metro alive. Bakesale-esk for buses.
