Now that the new assignment rules are in place , all you need is a school-aged kid and you, too, can attend an open house at your neighborhood school this month .
Enrollment for Fall 2010 – Open Houses at our Schools
Seattle Public Schools is committed to providing an excellent education for every student. Our new student assignment plan is an important step we are taking to ensure that each school is an excellent school. Please join us at an open house to learn more about your attendance area and option schools.
A new student assignment plan and new attendance area boundaries were approved by the School Board in 2009. The new plan will be implemented in phases beginning with the 2010-11 school year. Students entering Kindergarten and Grades 6 and 9 in fall 2010 will be assigned to their attendance area schools and receive their assignment in late February. Families may then apply during Open Enrollment (March 1-31, 2010) to attend another attendance area school or an option school.
Note: Students currently enrolled may remain at their current school through the highest grade as long as the services the student needs are available at the school.Weeknight open houses will be held from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. and Saturday open houses will be held from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. unless otherwise noted in the schedule. The intended audiences for these open houses are parents and guardians; we apologize but no child care will be available. For interpretation services, please contact the school three days before the scheduled open house date. School visits will also be scheduled beginning mid-February. Important information about the new assignment plan and enrollment is available at www.seattleschools.org.

We post this both as a service — there are, indeed, parents of children above stroller age in the Capitol Hill audience — and a warning. Read that school district stuff up there (emphasis our, by the way). That’s serious stuff. You sure you’re cut out for this?
For the rest of you tuning into this post only to observe the rituals and culture of Capitol Hill parents, be warned. The week of February 15-19 is mid-winter break at Seattle schools. A week off from school when the rest of the world is still working will probably mean some frazzled parental nerves.
