Snowmonkey’s House of Monsters: 2009-2010

It’s a tough world for little snowmonkeys. Snowmonkey’s House of Monsters, a retail and art space dedicated to small, furry creature-comforts, will shut down in April, according to an e-mail sent to customers by owner Curt Waller tonight. Thanks to neighbor Quazie for sharing the mail with us.

Hello friends of Snowmonkey!

Please please join us at Snowmonkey’s House of Monsters on Thursday, March 11, for the unveiling of the show XENOCLYPSE – a collection of dark and otherworldly sculpture by CHRIS TIEMEYER.  The opening reception will be from 6:00 to 10:00, and the show will be on display through April 6th.

This will be Snowmonkey’s LAST art show before shutting our doors in mid-April, so please represent! Tell your friends! Tell your enemies!  Tell the strange creatures that inhabit your dreams!

Of course, since it is the last show, we simply HAVE to have the absinthe fountain flowing!Hope to see you all there!

The shop has filled a tiny space up the stairs inside Bluebird at 1205 E. Pike since last summer. Waller, a former Victrola barista, also runs Domovoi Happy Foods, a supplier of snacks and sandwiches to Seattle area coffee shops.

Snowmonkey’s passing by no means marks the end of cute on Capitol Hill. Earlier this month, we reported that the Bluebottle Art Gallery has been purchased by the folks behind Cakespy, a Web site dedicated to baking-related products and art.

As much as I’d like to support local businesses AND those that are supporting artists, I’d have to say that the two times I’ve been there the person (a woman) managing there was pretty impersonable if not cold, wouldn’t even be bothered to look away from her computer to greet us. It’s a small space and pretty hard not to notice when someone walks in. Sorry that we didn’t look hipster enough. . .
