A tree was the victim of a hit and run early this morning outside the Harvard Square QFC. According to three witnesses, an SUV and a BMW were in the parking lot above the QFC. They both squealed their wheels as they did a large loop around the parking lot, almost hitting a white van in the lot. The SUV hit the tree after leaving the lot. The driver of the SUV got some things out of it, then got into the BMW with the other driver and left. Two witnesses positively identified the driver as the registered owner of the SUV using an instant lineup in the police car.
I walk down that sidewalk every morning, and it was just starting to bloom–struck down in the prime of its life. Hopefully the driver will be forced to pay for the re-installment of a similarly mature tree, not one of those tiny 2 in diameter things we see so much of nowadays that take almost 15 years to reach the size of this poor guy.
Actually a lot of trees up and down broadway (CHS you know which ones) and in the CH area have been mangled or “bent over” by cars. I’d like to see more tree cages protesting these guys in the future. Some trees in some parts of seattle have them its an excellent way to keep urine from directly contacting the dermal layer of the tree and provide some protection from reckless driving.
Great trees make a great neighborhood–and with level of abuse the trees endure up and down broadway, pike/pine (look every weekend morning and you will see what i am talking about) the main CH streets will NEVER have great trees. That is all.
Will there be a funeral? ;)
If you’re going to run from the scene of an accident, shouldn’t you take your car with you?!

i think broadway needs this level of reimbursement after the trauma its going to be suffering over the next 5 years is complete. We can make it very special if done right, the LT Residents are going to have to speak up.
That guy was probably going to do the ‘ole “I didn’t do it, my car was stolen last night” bit. That is the only logical reason I can come up with why he would leave his own car at the scene. Glad no bystanders were hurt.
This is why we can’t have nice things.
you just took the whole “tree hugging” thing to level 99, holy shit
He’s clearly made a parking violation as the sign states in Photo #2 shows.
he was probably drunk.
“you just took the whole “tree hugging” thing to level 99, holy shit “
matt is the lorax, he speaks for the trees!
And of course the “my car was stolen” excuse wouldn’t work since he was ID’d by a witness anyway. What a real dumbass! The things that some people do……..
