Elliott Bay opens — What are you reading CHS?

The Web site says it’s time. The “new chapter” on Capitol Hill begins at 1521 10th Ave.

CHS was lucky enough to get an early peek at the new Elliott Bay Book Co. digs on Capitol Hill as the crew scrambled to put the finishing — and not-quite-finished — touches on the new space scheduled to formally open on Thursday just in time for the big street celebration planned in the store’s honor. We had to promise to put our camera away with all the hammers and nails still flying around but the new place is impressive and we noticed a few fun things including a ginormous kids section complete with the famous Elliott Bay castle.

CHS also noticed that the cafe area will still be under construction for the first several weeks of the new store’s existence and was not even allowed a glimpse of the new downstairs readings area as workers scrambled to complete the space in time for the first scheduled reading Thursday night — Anchee Min’s reading for her novel, Pearl of China. Also not ready for action — EB’s parking — but you’d rather walk anyway.

With shelves and shelves of possibilities, how about a little inspiration? What are you reading right now, CHS? Currently engrossed by Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo here at CHS HQ. You?

The Story of the Great War 1914-1918. by G.J. Meyer.

Let me tell you. The First World War was perhaps the most horrifyingly interesting event in the history of the world. The terrifying introduction of modern warfare.

Please be extra safe around Broadway & Pike/Pine starting next weekend, when Elliott Bay’s new parking garage opens. Dozens/hundreds of new unfamiliar tourists driving around our urban streets every day means more accidents and probably more fatalities… Broadway and Pike is already the 2nd most dangerous intersection for pedestrians and bicyclists in the city. A giant retail parking garage for tourists has never happened before in Capitol Hill.

book ADD. Usually I am reading several things simultaneously.

Right now, I am bouncing back and forth between the English translation of Umberto Eco’s “How to travel with a Salmon & other essays”, “Heat” by Bill Buford, and (unpublished) writings by my grandmother, whom I never really knew.

Just got back and the new space is beautiful. The staff seems exhausted but happy.

I bought two books – both now in paper – Cheever: a Life by Blake Bailey and Flannery: a Life by Brad Gooch.

The store looks great!

Ash is so awesome. Loved it. So glad someone else has read it!

I’m currently on the fast, fun, and fluffy Heist Society by Ally Carter and the darker Bog Child by Siobhan Dowd.
