Wild Capitol Hill: 7 Volunteer Park baby ducks edition

Here’s another avian entry for our Wild Capitol Hill posts. We’ve also featured this beautiful heron and these predatory raptors in Volunteer Park in the past. Now there’s a family of seven ducklings and a busy single mother calling the park’s koi pond home.

They’re a popular attraction for joggers and passerby. And the older gentleman feeding them old(er) bread even though the sign clearly says not to. And the woman lecturing the older gentleman that he shouldn’t be doing that. And the older gentleman recruiting innocent bystanders — in Russian? — to grab a piece of bread and feed the ducks too so the lady might leave them all alone. Meanwhile, the baby ducks scramble up the jury-rigged baby duck steps so they can get in and out of the pond. Please don’t tell the raccoons.

Thanks, Mom, for letting me use your camera and for resisting the urge to join that lady in haranguing the bread man.

Sights such as these make me remember why I love Seattle. It’s a city but then you have baby ducks running around a few blocks away.

Make way for ducklings.

…some form of food pellet would be OK for the mother duck and the fish … most likely better quality feed as well …

I love baby ducks as they paddle around … and later they can be eaten … and the feet dried and used a good luck symbol ….

There were nine ducklings when I was there on Sunday afternoon. I hope the other two are OK. Maybe they’re just camera-shy?

They were adorable waddling about on the lily pads.

Not joining in on the duck feeding took all the self-control I could muster up…
