If u don’t like noise, move off Hill blah blah blah: Nightlife forum looks at city initiatives

This Seattle Crime map shows clusters of disturbances reported to Seattle Police across Capitol Hill over the previous 30 days. Two things seem to generate noise complaints on Capitol Hill: bars and parks. We’re against banning either and might even be *for* bars in parks if anybody asks. But the point in this: As City Hall looks for ways to embrace nightlife and the quality of life — and revenue — opportunities associated with it, our increasing density and intertwining of “commercial” and “residential” means there needs to be good solutions that help bars and restaurants be “good neighbors.”

For those social scientists among you who would like to study the mayor’s eight nightlife proposals from within the very environment the possible new rules and ordinances will affect, here’s a laboratory you might be interested in. East Pike’s Hunter Gatherer Lodge is host Wednesday night to Seattle’s Nightlife Throwdown, a young people who drink booze-focused forum to educate, etc. Here are the details from the Washington Bus and L’Étranger, the young-ish people who drink booze putting on the event:

Throwdown starts at 8:00 p.m. at the Hunter Gatherer Lodge (722 E Pike St—doors open at 7:00 p.m.). Come question politicians, police, and bar owners about what they’re doing to improve Seattle’s nightlife. Music before and after by DJ Mike Nipper from the Emerald City Soul Club and J-Justice of SunTzu Sound! Hosted by Toby Crittenden from the Washington Bus! Back-up hosted by me!

All happening tonight!

I am all for people having fun and why not stay open..But it would be nice if the streets were cleaned up after all this. I live right in the middle of Pike/Pine and have to trudge through all of the trash that has been left by the indiviudals having all this fun. Maybe some trash cans on the streets that were not over filled, or maybe if those coming in from the suburbs that think they can throw their trash all over the place changed it would help the matter. Hey have fun-but respect the city!!! Your cigarette butts, garbage and bottles are not appreciated.

Ryan is absolutely right. Tried making the same point at the “Throwdown” event with Mayor and night club owners on East Pike last night. Not only do we get some rowdy and inebriated folks pouring out on streets an 2pm but they also produce enormous amounts of trash and garbage in the overflowing dumpsters at that hour. Often not picked up for days or long weekends. Being dumpster and trash free at all hours and days only takes a commitment to Cleanscapes frequest bag and pickup program on the part of Bar owners. Get the dumpsters off the public sidewalks, alleys and streets. Clean, safe, neighborhoods make for good business and more of it. Everyone benefits. Hooray for lively night life but let’s make wonderful all the way round.

I have to say I also agree…!
Not only is the trash unsanitary it takes away from the beauty which is Capital Hill. I have lived here for many years and it seems to only get worse. I don’t believe the garbage is ever cleaned up. What are our taxes paying for anyway?
To make matters worse grafitti is a serious problem. How this can happen everywhere every weekend makes me think there is absolutely no one watching our streets. I say this as an owner that has to constatly re-paint and clean up after these very people that want more time..
Other cities care for their streets, take a look at Chicago or Portalnd-clean.
I agree you can have as much time to have fun as you want but stop the distruction of Capital Hill while you do so!!!

If there is a way to guarantee the environment can be improved by any of these proposals than okay why not. Night life is a great way to keep Capital Hill alive.
But I agree unless the trash can be taken care of then its a problem. Will the taxes made be used to clean things up?
BTW Isn’t there an ordinace against littering?

Yes, there is an ordinance against littering, but using the logic of Cap Hill residents on other posts (not just this one) we should learn to live with it because it’s part of the culture of The Hill.

… GARBAGE = RATS …

There is one very good reason to get a grip on this needed clean up and timely removal of garbage.

We need to address this as a community.

Oh, I agree filth is filth and shoud be cleaned up. I was commenting more about the title of the article in conjunction with where the conversation has headed. “If you don’t like the noise…”

People need to keep in mind that people live here, not just play here. Realisitically The Hill isn’t Disneyland, nor should that be expected. Follow the rules (including noise), pick your shit up, and come to my neighborhood any time you want!
