AAA Locksmith leaves Broadway taking Murray the cat with it

Here Kitty., originally uploaded by Mishio.

Another of the king cats of Broadway has left Capitol Hill. Last summer, we lost George. Now, Murray, the always there to say good evening to you cat in the window of AAA Locksmith & Security has moved along with his business to downtown Seattle.

Owner Rob Watson tells CHS that AAA has been on Broadway for 40 years. “Thanks for the first 40,” he said.

No word on what’s next for the 512 Broadway E space but we’ll keep our eyes peeled — how about a patisserie?

Thanks for the pic, tipster Todd

Watson said AAA needed a bigger space to expand its services and also is hoping that customers will find it easier to park at its new 3rd Ave place of business. Watson said many of his customers will continue with him in the new location. And, of course, Murray is coming along, too.

“We’ve always had cats. The customers love them,” Watston said. “When the first one died, customers brought us (Murray).”

But the absence will be noted — especially on a quiet weeknight. Sometimes, it was just you, Broadway and Murray. Now it’s just you and Broadway. You’ll have to figure it all out on your own.

OK, Twice Sold Tales is a block or so off Broadway now, but Marco is typically “on view” in the window:

Saw Murray onThursday in his new home (Nyberg). Said to tell everyone on the Hill “meow”.

The cat’s name is Bernie, not Murray.

Fortunately I think this space won’t work for these anyway. But what we DON’T need:

1. another coffee place
2. another Pho place
3. another Thai place
4. another sushi place
5. another pizza place
6. another Mexican place
7. probably any new food place, at all
8. another “Shoppe” that sells gifty junk you don’t need, and will go out of business anyway

I could go on, but I’ll get off my soapbox now, in case someone else wants to pontificate. :-Þ

1. Agree

6. Disagree – I’ve yet to find a decent sit-down family Mexican restaurant on the Hill, although the locksmith space won’t work for that.
7. Somewhat disagree. I think something different like a bakery could do well.
8. Agree

but I’m curious what you think should/could go in that space? There are already clothing shops, hair salons, banks, liquor stores, etc. on Broadway as well.

6. you are right, I was really thinking tacos, which are already well represented
7. right again, if a bakery could fit there, it might do well

I don’t even want to guess what should go in there. I actually think Broadway might even have too much built-out retail space for the demand. Every new bldg puts in ground floor retail, but that doesn’t mean there’s enough business to fill them all.

I always imagined the cat would pretend that he was the one who popped that safe, not burglars. He seemed like kind of a badass.
