A week later, few answers in 700 Broadway sex assault

One week ago this Monday morning, CHS reported on a police investigation underway at the 700 Broadway building. We soon learned details of the reported crime — a sexual assault at knifepoint inside the building. A week later, Seattle police have released no new details about the disturbing incident.

According to the preliminary report released by SPD, the victim told police he was physically attacked and sexually assaulted in his apartment around 1:30a that Monday. We’ve learned that officers were called to the hospital where a man was being treated for severe injuries that morning just before 5a.

The victim told police his attacker was a Hispanic male, 30 to 40 years old, with a medium build, short dark hair and a beard. The victim said the man was wearing a black jacket, a red t-shirt with a white logo, blue jeans and black gloves. Anybody with information is urged to call 911 immediately.

The victim told police the man was unknown to him but SPD has offered little additional information other than confirming with CHS that they are investigating a “stranger” sexual assault. SPD detectives will not say how the attacker was able to gain access to the building. In addition to the man’s apartment, detectives were seen combing other parts of the building including the ground-floor parking garage area. SPD also will not confirm whether a man matching the suspect description was spotted on any security video recorded in the apartment building on the morning of the attack.

Meanwhile, the search for a man matching the suspect description continues. No suspect sketch has been released and no additional details have been added to the suspect’s description.

CHS has confirmed that detectives are focused on speaking with witnesses who live in or near the apartment building and aren’t looking at any nearby bars or restaurants as part of the investigation. Anybody with information is encouraged to call 911.

East Precinct has reportedly beefed up patrols in the area of the apartments but we haven’t heard back yet on details of the increased presence.

Police came to my friends apartment last night to inform her that they had arrested a man who had been peeping through her window. They said that he matched the description of the man who raped a man at knife point last week. She lives only a couple blocks a way from the 700 building.

Perhaps my frame of reference is skewed by growing up in a smaller city, but I can’t believe the cops haven’t been communicating anything to the neighborhood via press release or any other means. Earlier in the year a corpse was found at the site of the future Fed / Rep park a few blocks away and there wasn’t any real communication from them on that either.

My experience with the east precinct after my checkbook was stolen led me to come to the conclusion they are not good about keeping the victim updated on the case. That was 10 years ago, some things seem to be unchanged.

So then is the person who was peeping through your friend’s window still in custody?

Please write me back about the man who matched the description of the rapist and was arrested for peeping in a woman’s window. I have a very serious reason for wanting to know more — serious enough for me to be willing to post my email address publicly on this topic. It’s fvickie AT comcast DOT net
