Blotter | Value Village shoplift chase, family’s run-in with burglar, silver plundered on Boylston

  • Value Village shoplift chase: Police busted an alleged shoplifter who fled Value Village and pulled a knife on the store employee who was chasing him early Monday night. SPD says the man was caught by police as he ran from 11th Ave to the Harvard Market parking lot at Pike and Broadway. Police say they found $33.89 of allegedly stolen clothing in the man’s possession and a 3-inch knife. The suspect, also arrested for theft last spring, was booked into jail for investigation of armed robbery. The SPD report on the incident is below.

  • Broadway chair assault: A man was arrested last Friday near Seattle Central after reports that he assaulted a woman with a metal chair. The woman, seen by police with the man earlier in the day, did not have a relationship with the man so the case is not being investigated as domestic violence, police say.
  • Armed robbery: We reported this week on an early Thursday gunpoint robbery at 12th and Republican.
  • Summit assault: Police arrested a man for investigation of burglary and assault in an altercation inside a building in the 1700 block of Summit late Friday night. According to the report, police were already at the building conducting a follow-up on a previous call regarding the suspect when a fight broke out in another part of the building:
  • Drug rip on Summit: Also in the 1700 block of Summit, we reported on this heroin deal gone bad early Sunday morning.
  • Belmont prescription drug theft: Meanwhile, in the 1700 block of Belmont, police Friday morning searched for a suspect described as “a white male, ‘XXX’, with long blonde hair and wearing a beanie cap, purple bandana, black jacket, and black pants carrying bags of groceries” after a resident of a building told police the man had entered her apartment to steal medication from two elderly people staying with her aged 78 and 85. “The three victims confronted the suspect in the hallway,” the report goes on to say. “At first he attempted to blame the missing items on an unidentified party but then took off running. The suspect left the building in an unknown direction.” The report says that the three victims and the suspect are each clients of a Summit Ave clinic. The report states police planned to contact the suspect there.
  • 16th Ave E’s family’s scary run-in with burglar: This Friday night burglary on 16th Ave E near Grandview Pl E sparked a brief and unsuccessful manhunt — and, according to the now-released SPD report, gave the family inside the home during the break-in a massive scare:

According to the report, the family had been upstairs putting children to bed when they heard noises downstairs that sounded like the family “dog standing on the kitchen island eating something.” The family then heard somebody walking on the stairs. “What the fuck! XXX there is a burglar in the house!” the report quotes one of the residents as shouting. The burglar took off running with the family’s $2,000 laptop in tow. Police were unable to find the suspect after a brief search near Volunteer Park.

  • Broadway Chase protest trial: The Chase 5 trial began this week and is expected to be wrapped up before the weekend.
  • 15th Ave E break-in: A postal worker reported a break-in at an unoccupied home in the 1100 block of 15th Ave E Saturday afternoon. According to the report, the perpetrator apparently “punched” a hole in the front door window to gain access and rip off electronics.
  • Pirate’s plunder on Boylston Ave E: Police investigating a break-in at a 400 block Boylston Ave E building’s storage area were told Saturday night about one interesting part of the haul for the thief who apparently unscrewed the hinges of lockers to access residents’ valuables. According to the report, the thief made off with “five 100 ounce silver bars.” According to THE INTERNET, 500 ounces of pure silver is worth about $16,000.

It seems pretty dumb to me to keep $16,000 worth of silver in a building’s storage area. Haven’t the victims ever heard of bank safety deposit boxes?
