Dan Savage: Capitol Hill’s First Gay Celebrity

Or so says a new biography — Dan Savage: The First Gay Celebrity —  from New York Times writer Mark Oppenheimer on the Volunteer Park-area sex columnist. About the whole “first” thing — Oppenheimer points out that there have been lots of gay celebrities, of course, but he believes Savage was the first who was gay from the beginning of his rise to prominence unlike others who came out of the closet on their way to the top. It’s a breezy, short read about one of the more interesting men living in your neighborhood. At $1.99, totally worth it.

Like news sources from small towns, the CH Blog certainly loves to highlight the Hill’s first this, biggest that, #1 whatever…as though there is some self esteem issue the Hill is long-suffering through.

I just think it’s cool to point out neat things like this. I’m not sure I understand your sentiment, to be honest. Does a kitten die every time a neighborhood blog reports on…. stuff about the neighborhood or something?

Dan Savage. You know, the gay activist who stands up to bullying by denigrating and bullying those who dont think like him. Ironic, isn’t it?
