Not since Leilani’s Lumpia Land (The luscious allure of Leilani’s Lumpia Land) has the parking lot at 1208 Pine seen this much excitement. Lamentably, Leilani’s is long gone, but, starting Valentine’s morning, pancake-on-a-stick purveyor My Sweet Little Cakes will call the lot at Melrose and Pine home. Sounds like a sweet way to start your sweet day. Or savory way to start your… anyway. Happy Valentine’s Day!
“Owners Jesse and Sheena Lee start with scratch-made batters and fill them with quality, sweet and savory ingredients,” the MSLC announcement reads. “Each variety is paired with a custom dipping sauce to complement its flavors and they will offer seven varieties daily.”
The mobile-style food cart is making long-term plans for the space. My Sweet Little Cakes is planned to be open in the lot 7 AM to 5 PM on weekdays. It joins the Shell station lot at Pike and Broadway as one of the few daily “street food” locations on the Hill besides the hot dog vendors outside a handful of clubs.
It also helps fill in Capitol Hill’s “________ on a stick” category as Unicorn’s many offerings have faded into the hipster past. The pancakes — they could have called them waffles, no? — were developed under the auspices of chef Nami Soto who has worked at Andaluca and currently works as a recipe consultant. Here’s the menu.
MY SWEET LITTLE CAKES MENU
SWEET• Green Apple & Caramel with Pecans (Vegan & Gluten Free)• Blueberry Lemon Ricotta with Honey Lemon Syrup• Red Velvet Buttermilk & Dark Cherries and Sweet Cream Cheese
SAVORY• Beer & Hickory Smoked Bacon with Maple Syrup• Free Range Chicken & Waffle with Maple Butter
SPECIALTY• Chorizo, Seasonal Bell Peppers & Melted Cheddar Cheese• Cornbread, Cheddar, Jalapeno & Cilantro (Vegetarian)
Hotcakes prices vary from $5-6 for one, $8-10 for two and $18 for five for you big eaters.
You also might want to grab a cup of Sheena’s Hush-Hush Chai Tea, “a spicy, highly caffeinated, scratch-made blend of ginger, cloves, cinnamon, and more, served with fresh steamed milk.”
Part of the appeal will be getting the hotcakes baked fresh to order. MSLC says the cakes are also a “healthier on-the-go alternative to fast food for morning commuters, students, parents with kids, and the busy lunch crowd.” We don’t know about that. But we do know that, once more, Capitol Hill leads Seattle in “_______ on a stick.”
