A man wanted in connection with a Seattle murder investigation believed to be on the run to Las Vegas was taken into custody during a Salt Lake City bus layover Thursday only minutes after U.S. Marshals gathered a key piece of timely information as part of a busy day of investigation round Capitol Hill and the Central District.
The 43-year-old was taken into custody as his Greyhound bus headed for Vegas made a layover in Utah, a U.S. Marshals representative tells CHS.
30 minutes earlier around 4:15 PM Seattle time, U.S. Marshals and Seattle Police converged outside the Shell station at Broadway and Pike. The U.S. Marshals representative said that information gathered in the Capitol Hill incident allowed law enforcement officials to pinpoint the suspect’s location and arrest him on a felony warrant related to drug charges.
The representative tells CHS that the man is wanted in connection with the September 24th murder of a 22-year-old in Pioneer Square. Melvin Dees was gunned down in broad daylight at 2nd and Yesler. The suspect has not yet been charged with the crime.
There were no additional arrests made in the Broadway investigation.
Earlier in the day, East Precinct police were instructed to be on the lookout for a black Camaro involved in the case as federal agencies searched the area.
so why were they at Broadway & Pike? Is the gas station a new crime hub? Can we get rid of it then?
Person I talked with declined to comment on the specifics of the Pike/Broadway investigation and what information it yielded. But he did say it lead directly to the arrest 30 minutes later and 800 miles away.
we watched the whole thing go down at broadway and pike from our office. this was totally intense and the us marshalls had huge guns – not like an AK-47 or whatever from a seattle SWAT team. these things were no joke. and most of the officers were in plain clothes. 7 or so unmarked SUV’s surrounded this guy.
nuts.
