A fire on the lower level of the auto row-era apartment building home to the Wildrose and Hothouse Spa and Sauna was quickly extinguished late Wednesday night.
Seattle Fire was called to the corner of 11th and E Pike just before 11 PM to a report of a fire on the lower level of the 1905-built The Winston building. Crews were able to take care of the fire before it spread to the upper levels of the building including the popular bar and the residential apartments above.
Crews could be seen accessing the fire down the stairs between the old building and the new Jack Apartments development to its south but it wasn’t possible to see what was damaged around the spa’s location in the back of the Winston.
Residents and a few pets cleared out of the building waited along E Pike during the response as Seattle Fire blocked off E Pike and 11th Ave with several trucks. A few patrons had returned to the Rose by the time crews were clearing out.
There were no reported serious injuries. The Seattle Fire Marshal was called to the scene to determine a cause for the fire.
UPDATE 9/26/19 7:55 AM: A Seattle Fire spokesperson said the fire’s cause was determined to be an accidental “food on stove” fire. Damage was reportedly minimal.
