After alleged $800 heist downtown Friday, Starbucks bandit’s robbery goes less well Saturday in the Central District

A Starbucks bandit who SPD says later told police he was also responsible for another recent heist was apprehended within minutes Saturday morning after threatening he had a gun in a hold-up of the coffee chain’s 23rd and Jackson location.

Police responded and surrounded the area around cafe just before 9:30 AM where the suspect was reported by witnesses to have fled south on Jackson and through a nearby park.

According to East Precinct updates, the suspect told workers at the coffee shop he had a handgun and demanded cash. He reportedly fled the shop with a Starbucks bag of $1 and $5 bills.

Police say police and a K9 unit dog quickly tracked down the suspect trying to hide behind a nearby residential building. SPD says they recovered Starbucks cash but no weapon was reported found.

According to SPD, the suspect “provided a full confession for todayโ€™s robbery” in an interview with officers back at the East Precinct and also admitted to a similar robbery on Friday.

Friday, police say a man matching the suspect’s description entered a Starbucks on 7th Ave downtown and threatened that he had a gun as he made off with around $800 in cash.

The suspect was booked into King County Jail after Saturday’s arrest for investigation of robbery.

On the plus side at least it was a comprehensible motive and he didnโ€™t hurt anyone.

What was the suspect’s motive? I saw no mention of that in the article.

As to whether he ‘hurt’ anyone…he threatened the employees by saying he had a gun. Having known bank tellers who have been threatened in such a way – it is NOT a victimless crime. It is psychologically damaging to have one’s life credibly threatened. People get PTSD from this stuff.

No to speak for this person, but I interpreted this as in comparison to past events in this lot. Random shootings into the parking lot.

Yeah, westerns don’t take care of their minds one bit, and then the predictable happens and they cry their heads off.

Jackson goes east/west. You can’t go south.

People will always steal. Human beings have certain moral and ethical frailties, and stealing is one of them.

If this guy went through $800 in less that 24 hours and Saturday was also about survival UBI isn’t going to help.

Most-low income people are law-abiding and do not commit crimes in order to survive. Those that do are criminals, and we don’t need to condone their behavior as you do.

Nobody HAS to rob to survive. Many places are desperate for new employees right now. Look and youโ€™ll see.

UBI will not teach people how to manage their unmanageable lives. It will not help them regain real self-respect. It will not help them get and stay sober so they can MAYBE start to think clearly and it wonโ€™t teach them how to manage money and save it to improve their situation.

Education, opportunities for employment and SOBRIETY COUNSELING will help clean up our streets. And a reformed, well-trained, trustworthy police department will do wonders for crime reduction. We also -temporarily- need eyes and cameras everywhere so that criminals can easily be tracked down, identified and corrected. Forced counseling. Tough love. A fresh start. Read that all again.

I’m surprised Starbucks had $800 on the premises. Places like that have gone pretty much cashless, especially in the past year.
