Neighborhood pitches in after ‘flower guy’ hit by driver at 11th and Pike

(Image: Vermillion)

Seattle Fire says it was only at the scene for a couple minutes but the community around 11th Ave’s Vermillion has responded in a big way after a neighborhood character was struck by a driver while crossing E Pike.

Mohammed “the flower guy” is finding a lot of support in the neighborhood even as he remains mostly a mystery while Vermillion has mounted a small fundraiser on his behalf:

Anyone who has ever spent an evening or two on Capitol Hill likely knows Muhammed, the rose guy. He is a kind and loving soul who has survived so much adversity, and still spreads so much love.

Vermillion is collecting funds to help via Venmo and cashapp: @vermillionarts $vermillionarts. Add a note to let them know who the money is for.

According to Seattle Fire and SPD, a driver struck a pedestrian in the street near 11th and Pike around 6:15 PM Saturday. SFD says its crews were only on scene briefly and did not have further information on the pedestrian’s injuries which were not believed to be life threatening. According to radio updates, the pedestrian was reportedly knocked to the pavement and the driver remained at the scene as police arrived.

According to Vermillion’s post about the fundraiser, the flower vendor had “a big bouquet” with him ready for another night of selling roses at Pike/Pine nightspots when he was hit. Vermillion lent a hand by selling the flowers for him that night “to raise money for the ambulance ride and any other expenses he will have from this incident.”

If you would like to help or check for updates, you can find more information on Vermillion’s Facebook page.

I know this isn’t a popular opinion with the “abolish prisons” crowd, but if you hit someone with your car you should go to jail.

Best wishes for his recovery.

Accidents happen, not every auto collision should result in jail time. With that said, the rose guy is an institution on the hill and I’m glad he wasn’t seriously hurt.

Calling hitting someone with a car an “accident” is idiotic. In what other scenario can you take something that weighs 2000 pounds and ram it into someone and just chalk it up to an “accident”

I’m generally the last person to defend drivers…. But there are no details in this story to make any judgement about.

If you intentionally assault someone with a vehicle, yeah, jail sounds good, but if someone runs out in front of your car against a light? Do you truly propose to treat both situations the same?

Not the same, but yes if someone crosses against a light and you hit them, go to jail. Cars yield to pedestrians in all situations.

You are nuts….. I’m all for safe, reasonable, law abiding driving. I definitely think many drivers need to slow down, calm down and be responsible. But I’ve see other road users do incredibly stupid things too… there are times when the driver truly couldn’t avoid someone and wasn’t doing anything wrong. No, hitting a pedestrian shouldn’t mean an automatic jail sentence.

You are not for safe, reasonable law, abiding driving.

You definitely subscribe to: “Pedestrians have the right of way unless they are in the way”

Nope – you couldn’t be more wrong or have made a crazier assumption. What you are proposing isn’t even remotely reasonable.

You are suggesting that sometimes it’s fine for someone to hit someone with their car. I’m suggesting it’s not.

Shows how much crazy car culture there is in this city/country.

Oh that makes sense, yeah I’ve changed my mind.

@ previous comment to Barb – I don’t know who you are, but please stop impersonating people….

and Barb, No… I never said it’s OK to hit someone with a car.

I said it is unreasonable to say 100%, across the board, no matter the circumstances that a person should *go to jail* if they hit a pedestrian.

Man, that’s all it takes to eventually end up homeless. Hope he’s ok.

But all the police-supporting republican crowd will say all homeless are drug users. Careful! Don’t ruin their narrative.

Yeah, they don’t have a healthy fear of karma.
