A man the subject of “an extreme risk protection order” was taken into custody after leaping from a second floor window in a SWAT standoff that closed the area around 18th Ave in the Central District Thursday afternoon, police say.
According to the Seattle Police report on the incident, around 12:30 PM Thursday, members of the SPD Crisis Response Team “attempted to serve an extreme risk protection order (ERPO) on a man in crisis who had significantly mentally declined in recent weeks.”
“He was in an extremely delusional state and told officers he did not recognize their authority, they were fake police, and that he was a federal agent,” the report reads.
Officers had probable cause for an arrest for felony assault and property damage from a recent incident in which the suspect allegedly fired a shotgun into his neighbor’s house, damaging the structure but causing no injuries.
SPD says officers attempted to contact the man after the August 14th gunfire incident but were unable to interview him “due to escalating behavior.”
According to the SPD report on Thursday’s incident, SWAT surrounded the suspect’s house and the Hostage Negotiation Team attempted to negotiate. As the SWAT officers entered the house, police say the suspect jumped from a second floor window, suffering non-life threatening injuries. He was taken into custody by police and then transported to Harborview due to injuries sustained from the fall.
SPD says the suspect’s case will be managed by state approved crisis responders in coordination with with King County Jail upon his eventual release for psychiatric treatment.
18th Ave was cordoned off by police from around Yesler to Jefferson during the response. There were no reported additional injuries.
