You can mourn Cafe Presse. Or celebrate Maripili. Sob for Mia’s. Or get hot and bothered about Korn Dog.
We prefer to see the tteokbokki in life.
CHS reported here earlier this month on the exit of much-loved Mia’s off Broadway after nearly 15 years of affordable, friendly, delicious service on the southeast corner of the Seattle Central parking garage.
2022 will bring a new day as the Korn Dog era begins just off Broadway.
Owner Seonja “Sunny” Lim tells CHS he is planning a January opening with Korean-style corn dogs and tteokbokki, “the representative street food of Korea.”
“Many people are interested in Korean culture, Netflix movies and food, including BTS,” Lim writes. “Interest and popularity of Korean style hot dogs are high in trend-reading big cities such as LA, Chicago, New York, London and Paris. With my experience and know-how of running a Tapas Lab restaurant in Green Lake, I would like to introduce trendy Korean street food to Capitol Hill.”
Korn Dog will, indeed, mark Lim’s second venture in Seattle. His Lab concept debuted with small plates and Asian fusion on Woodlawn Ave NE three years ago.
More details of Korn Dog’s offerings are still to come but, if Lim’s diagrams are any indicator, we’re in for an experience. Korean corn dogs can run the gamut from hot dogs to fish or rice cakes to cheese, coated in a batter — and sometimes topped with panko or things like french fries or ramen — then deep fried. Tteokbokki, meanwhile, involves chewy rice cakes and the burn of gochujang chili paste.
Korn Dog will also face Korean corn dog competition in the city. The Chungchun Rice Dogs chain landed here in the International District in late 2019.
On Capitol Hill, the corn dogs are unlikely to make you forget about Mia’s and the smiles that usually greeted you there. But there’s a good chance Korn Dog will create a few smiles of its own on E Pine in 2022.
