In mid-March, CHS broke the news — Capitol Hill classic The Canterbury was closing after 46 years on 15th Ave E to make way for a new restaurant project.

It is now coming up on mid-May and the windows of ye olde tavern remain covered over with dark plastic sheets and small flyers announcing the closure.

“Thank you to everyone who continued to support the Canterbury through unprecedented times as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic,” they read.

What is next for the space at the corner of 15th and Mercer?

The new ownership has been quiet about the deal to take over the space on the ground floor of Community Roots Housing’sΒ affordableΒ Fredonia Apartments building but CHS has learned a bit about the plans for the project. This block of 15th Ave E won’t remain empty with a new venue is now lined up to join the city’s dining scene.

UPDATE: Ownership tells CHS, under the new Meliora project, the Canterbury’s kitchen is set to be reborn as a new “modern European” restaurant from veterans of the city’s Indian food and drink scene.

The new information clears up reports provided to CHS that the restaurateurs were ready to continue their run of Seattle-area India venues.

Meliora will be part of the Rasai restaurant family, born from the Fremont “progressive Indian” joint that celebrated a grand opening in spring 2021 on N 36th St. under longtime Seattle restaurant veterans.

The Singh family behind Rasai and now Meliora is poised to put the Canterbury’s full refurbishment of its infrastructure in its 2014 overhaul to new use.

Ownership tells CHS the plan is for the new restaurant to reactivate the 15th Ave E space by June or July. Expect some of the Canterbury’s elements including a suit of armor or two to stick around.

While the family has experience growing restaurants with Indian cuisine menus, a representative tells CHS they hope to try something new with Meliora with an “exclusive” approach to a modern European menu.

We already mourned the death of the OG Canterbury back in the day so I’ll just wish the newcomers all the best and come by when they open. Hope they choose to keep the funky decor β€” lot of history there!

The Canterbury spirits will not like this.

Justin, any new updates, or have the Canterbury ghosts cursed the project?
