Though it only was able to bloom for a short time before the COVID-19 crisis set in, the Glasswing Greenhouse brought a burst of life to the corner of Melrose and E Olive Way. Glasswing hopes to continue the growth at its Melrose Market location as it is shutting the Greenhouse space down:

Though the Greenhouse is closing its doors at this location, Glasswing will continue to offer all of the same “green” community services and specialty products that their Capitol Hill neighborhood has come to know. They have expanded their plant and garden assortment in-store at their main shop, located just a block away at 1525 Melrose Ave. Their workshop program released class dates for Spring and during the transition to a new space, these workshops will be hosted out of the Melrose Market, adjacent to Glasswing.

CHS reported here on the opening four years ago of the live plant shop outgrowth of Glasswing Forest Eckley and Alisa Furoyama have created a lush greenhouse at the corner of E Olive Way and Melrose in the former home of John John’s Gameroom. The building had been in the running for one of E Olive Way’s open spaces for retail marijuana but didn’t make the final cut.

There’s no word yet about what will come next for the space. Neighboring bar Speckled and Drake lost its leased and closed earlier this year.

As spring 2023 approaches, Glasswing is now moving out of the corner of the building and planning a big moving sale the weekend of March 4th and 5th with plants, pots, furniture, fixtures and assorted home goods discounted starting at 40% to help ease the exit.

Glasswing says the change comes as they seek more space to support their growing Residential and Commercial Plant Design Services.

The Melrose Market indie fashion and design store debuted in 2013.

Glasswing is located at 1525 Melrose. Learn more at glasswingshop.com.

UPDATE: An E Pine indoor plant and gardening shop is also closing. Plant Shop has announced it will close its doors this week after six years of business.

Felt like that business has been closed for a while….sad that is closed but hoping something else moves in that will actually be open for the community to check out.

There’s been like 8 businesses here in the last ten years. I hear rent is hella high and well it doesn’t get alot of money paying foot traffic despite being at the crossroads of caphill/downtown. idk emoji insert. Maybe a new bauhaus would be nice, call it de stijl or something.

I seem to recall that when I first came to Capitol Hill in 2003 that the space where Glasswing was on Olive and Melrose seemed to be some sort of junk/used items store. Unfortunately, I never got around to investigating it. Does anyone recall that?
