Like spring morel mushrooms that appear in the seasons following a wildfire, small, independent retailers continue to pop up around late-pandemic Capitol Hill even as some past ideas and concepts fade away. Here are a few new shops to check out and one to say goodbye to on Capitol Hill.
- Windthrow: Just opened this week, this “beneath the canopy, above the sky” gear retailer is making its space at 15th and Harrison. “Opened a store with the help of lots of amazing (and incredibly generous) friends,” owner Nate Hoe says. “It’s filled with love and great stuff.” The outdoor equipment shop can join the coming Gearhouse Capitol Hill project in outfitting your PNW adventures. 345 15th Ave E windthrow.store
-
Sergius & Bacchus: New LGBT+ owned E Pike fashion shop also hasn’t marked its grand opening yet but the store is open just east of 12th Ave. Sergius & Bacchus will celebrate with a grand opening on Monday, April 17th. A showcase for “bold, beautiful masculine-styled clothing,” the new store is a project from Rick Jones and Ray Ochs — “We dreamed of building a shop totally unique for Seattle – now itβs a reality! Join us in celebrating and giving back to the LGBT+ community!” 1205 E Pike sergiusandbacchus.com
- Sporelust!: A fragile retail creature, the brick and mortar shop for mushroom fashion and culture purveyor has announced it is closing the store on April 15th — just as the morel season will start to pop around the Pacific Northwest. Sporelust! didn’t last quite a year on E Pike but everything is cool — no good idea dies in retail, it just regenerates online. “Itβs been a fun experiment and the local support from the neighborhood and Seattle at large has been overwhelming,” the goodbye message from owner Chris Adams reads. “You might be able to catch us after the 15th in some limited openings, but you can still find the goods online.” In the meantime, stop in for a sale during the shop’s final days.

Just stopped into Windthrow the other day, really impressed! Nice stock of camping essentials. So glad to have them on the hill
