Meet the Capitol Hill Artist | Juliet Fiss creates a Lush Computation with details precisely placed

Juliet Fiss discovered her love of painting while on a medical leave of absence from her Computer Science Ph.D program at the University of Washington. What sets her apart is her ability to merge her passion for mathematics and computer science into her art. Every symbol within her paintings has a numerical meaning behind it, whether it is to represent prime and composite numbers within an ordered sequence, or a step within a complex algorithm. Juliet has since completed her Ph.D and is now working as a full-time artist.

Juliet spends a lot of time doing data analysis to make sure that her work is as mathematically accurate as possible. Every detail within her paintings is precise and intentionally placed.

I had the opportunity to see the making of β€œFrequency Transformation,” a large 96” x 72” painting that is currently being exhibited at the M. Rosetta Hunter Art Gallery at Seattle Central CollegeΒ as part of the Lush Computation show. It’s a visual representation of the Fast Fourier Transformation algorithm. This algorithm is the reason behind why images can be compressed down to a smaller size, or why a music player can adjust the bass within an audio file after analyzing all of the different frequencies.

β€œI like exhibiting [my art] because I get to connect with people,” Fiss says. “To me, that’s the most fun part of me doing my art.”

View the finished painting at M. Rosetta Hunter Art Gallery on 1701 Broadway. The opening reception is on October 12th from 4 to 7 PM. To see more work by Juliet Fiss, check out her Instagram page.

Interesting! And I didn’t know Seattle Central had a gallery open to the public. I’ll definitely check it out.
