Fire in under-construction 13th Ave apartment development investigated

Seattle Fire says nobody was found inside after a fire did heavy damage Saturday morning to the upper stories of an apartment building under construction near 13th and Mercer.

Heavy smoke was reported billowing from the fourth floor of the new development around 11 AM as firefighters arrived to find the blaze spreading into the building. As ladder crews searched for anybody possibly trapped inside the under-construction structure ,SFD says its engine crews stretched hose lines to the fourth floor and put water on the fire. SFD reports it took 35 minutes to extinguish the blaze.

Investigators were working to determine a cause.

There were no reported injuries.

The nearly ocmpleted five-story 13th Ave E apartment is sandwiched between a landmark 1910-built cooperative and a single-family style home. CHS reported here in 2016 on the slowly moving development plans.

The location has been the site of another recent fire. In 2020, Seattle Fire responded to a blaze in the boarded-up single family home on the parcel eventually cleared away for the new project.

Walked by there on Sunday afternoon and unless the fire department had moved the entire construction fence out of the way during their response earlier that day, the site looked completely unsecured, with several window- and door openings still wide open – very inviting for someone trying to stay dry and undisturbed for the long holiday weekend…
Not a good end/start of the year for the general contractor.
