August 2022 Cal Anderson basketball court killing remains unsolved

Mercer Roy

A 2022 murder on the Cal Anderson Park basketball court remains unsolved.

Last week, CHS reported on the missed 2022 guilty plea that brought the case around the 2019 stabbing death of RayShauna Webber in Cal Anderson to a close. Lawyers for David Nichols at a plea deal with the King County Prosecutor that resulted in a 17-year sentence.

There has been no such justice in another past summer murder in the park, a CHS check of arrest and court records reveals.

Mercer Roy, 32, was shot on the basketball court at Cal Anderson Park and died on the west edge of the park in August 2022 as police rendered emergency aid and Seattle Fire medics arrived at the scene.

Witnesses said the shooting happened as part of an altercation stemming from a late night pick-up basketball game in the park. Police reported at least one person detained that morning but announced no arrests in the case.

Roy’s mother later launched her own campaign to gather information on the slaying but it’s not clear what came of the effort.

Roy’s case remains on a long list of recent East Precinct homicides that have gone unsolved or where no arrest has been announced.

He was murdered over the most pettiest of reasons. He was good at basket ball, the day he was murdered it was said he hooped the court in slides (flip flops)! I don’t forgive who did that to him for not speaking up on this innocent and talented man’s demise. I heard all about it second hand from reliable sources. It’s also noted that TT, one of the two brothers murdered back in 2023 on the same spot, was there that day too when Mercer was murdered. Someone who frequents the park knows who did it. But the no snitch code is prevalent as the police are really short staffed and protecting witnesses is of a particular community is not easy.
