Teen victim in deadly 27th and Spring shooting identified

The teen victim in Monday night’s deadly shooting in the Central District has been identified by authorities.

The King County Medical Examiner says Soloman Taylor died of a gunshot wound to the torso. He was 15.

CHS reported here on Monday’s deadly shooting as multiple 911 callers reported gunfire and a person down in the street near 27th and Spring around 7:45 PM. Police were looking for a vehicle reported leaving the scene but made no immediate arrests. SPD has asked the public for help in the case.

Taylor was an area resident and had been assigned to nearby Garfield High School but was not currently a student at the school.

Garfield officials and principal Tarance Hart have not publicly addressed the slaying.

Taylor is the second teen connected to Garfield to die in gun violence this year.

In September, Garfield began its new school year as Seattle officials led by Mayor Bruce Harrell announced a $14.5 million plan focused on intervention, mental health, and increased use of “school-based safety specialist” private security guards following the deadly lunchtime shooting of teen Amarr Murphy-Paine last June in the Garfield parking lot.

There have been no arrests in the Murphy-Paine case.

Monday night’s deadly shooting comes amid continued incidents of gun violence across the Central District and Capitol Hill including an incident earlier this month in which there were no injuries but police recovered a bullet fired into a Nova High School classroom during E Cherry gunfire that locked down the area.

The deadly shooting is the second being investigated in the East Precinct this month. CHS reported here on the murder of 25-year-old Breanna Simmons in an 11th Ave shooting on an early Saturday morning amid Pike/Pine’s nightlife crowds.

Taylor’s killing this week was reported as the city’s 53rd murder of 2024 as Seattle approaches last year’s total of 74.

What does it mean to be “assigned to Garfield HS” but not currently be a student? Meaning he never enrolled?

Whatever the situation was, this is tragic.

It just means his address is zoned for that school. Either his parents didn’t enroll him or he dropped out. For ex my nephew is assigned to Lowell but currently is homeschooled so he’s never attended.

Sadly that corner has seen many gang shootings over the last 20 years at least. That’s probably why this one received so little press coverage or public outrage.
