A man has been charged in the brutal shoplifting assault at Capitol Hill’s J’s Quick Stop that put the neighborhood market’s owner in the hospital. Meanwhile, the owner is apparently ready to move on from the Bellevue Ave store.

Marquez Echols, 40, has been charged with first-degree robbery in the September attack on owner Charlie Kim that police say stemmed from a dispute over the store’s 50 cent fee on a debit card charge for a 6-pack of beer. Police say Echols pummeled Kim with a can of beer before fleeing the store and leaving the shop owner bleeding on the sidewalk.

KOMO was first to report on the charges here.

CHS reported here on the September shoplifting assault and outpouring of community support to help cover Kim’s medical expenses.

Meanwhile, J’s Quick Stop is changing hands. According to permits approved by the state liquor board, the store on the street level of the 2001-built Hawthorne Apartments is under new ownership.

CHS reached out to learn more about the change but has not been able to reach the new ownership or Kim.

Charlie Kim and family will be greatly missed. I wish them well.

He was back working before the sale and looked good. No wonder when I popped by another time I didn’t recognize anybody.

“Marquez” needs to be thrown into jail for a long time like he threw hands at the store.

Fifty cents. It was over fifty cents.

It is time for things in this city to change. It is time to make people like Mr. Echols feel afraid again.

Afraid? When someone pulls this kind of stunt, they don’t sit down and evaluate their chances of being caught or the consequences of their act. The only people who stand to be afraid are law-abiding citizens who think about their actions. Echols was arrested and charged, what else do you want?
