A dog was shot and killed in an incident police say was self defense on a First Hill street just after midnight early Thursday morning.
Police say the shooting near 9th and Marion was reported around 12:15 AM after a dog owner opened fire on a dog who was fighting with his animal and “would not release its bite on the other dogβs neck.”
Police say both parties were walking their dogs in the area when the fight began and the animals could not be separated. One owner reportedly drew a handgun and fired a single shot, hitting the other owner’s dog.
The shooter reportedly left the scene with his brown pit bull but contacted 911 from a nearby hotel to report the incident as police were arriving at the scene where the dog was shot.
Arriving officers helped the owners of the shot dog deliver their pet to a nearby animal hospital. Police say the dog did not survive.
Police say the shooter had a Concealed Pistol License and turned over the handgun to police “for further investigation.”
“No arrest was made due to the circumstances,” SPD reports.

Oof, that’s just sad for all involved. No one wants to see a dog die, even if it’s to save another one.
Some thug didn’t manage his pit bull and shot another dog.
Exactly
agreed. 100% absolutely
Maybe carry pepper spray or a small compression horn rather than shooting the dog?
“Everyone should pack” and then this is what they use their gat for.
I hope people know that that you can dislodge a dog by lifting it up by its hind legs. No need to shoot or hurt them.
It was my dog that was shot. He was a wonderful gentle giant. He didn’t deserve to get shot and killed. I wasn’t there. I was asleep and my friend took him out to go to the bathroom just to be nice. Then this thug with a gun and a pitbull comes around the corner and stops in front of my dog while he’s doing his business. My dog acted in self defense, just like every other time he has been attacked. He never once attacked first. The dogs fought, and my dog was winning the fight, so how does this give the other dog owner the right to shoot my dog? Shot him in the back. Made him suffer. He says in self defense? I suppose if I had seen this from my window, I could have shot his dog in self defense as well? This makes no sense. Now a wonderful beautiful dog, that every one that met him, loved him deeply, is gone. My best friend is gone. I am left with nothing but a $600 bill for some thug killing my dog. I’m absolutely sick about it.
I’m really sorry about your dog, that’s heartbreaking!
The description of the incident and explanation is so odd. There’s so many ways to try to diffuse that situation without shooting and killing a dog and putting everyone at risk with stray bullets. I’m curious if the police did any sort of checking as to whether they had alcohol in their system when they fired their weapon in violation of conceal carry provisions?
So sorry about your dog. I cant even imagine the pain being victimized like that. It shouldn’t have happened. Walking around with a pit bull and a gun is sus. And I’m a 2A guy.
