Here’s how you can help after injury hit and run at Melrose and Mercer

With her Seattle Walk Report, writer Susanna Ryan has helped make Seattle a more joyful place to walk. Ryan is looking for help from the community after her partner was injured in a hit and run collision last week on Capitol Hill:

The driver hit them and then kept going, even with my partner stuck under the vehicle. They have been at Harborview ever since with several broken bones and severe road rash. I know that there were witnesses and folks who jumped in to help but I do not know who they are or what they saw, and as of now, the driver has not been caught. I would really love to hear from anyone who saw anything.

Ryan says the hit and run happened Sunday, May 25th just after 1 PM at Melrose and Mercer If you can help, drop CHS a line or reach out to Ryan.

According to the most recent updates, Ryan’s partner was discharged from Harborview after several surgeries and is recovering. There is a community fundraiser underway to help with costs.

So sorry to hear this. I have been following Seattle Walk Report for years and went to the book release when the book first went into print. Susanna is a lovely person who has done so much to highlight Seattle’s history, architecture and geography. I wish her partner a speedy recovery and justice for the hit and run.

My thoughts are with Susanna and her partner…I hope they make a quick recovery. And for the driver, I hope they never see another minute behind the wheel of a vehicle. Destroy the car too so they can get what’s likely to be their first taste of a bus after being released from their jail sentence.

Speeding and bad driving is one of the main sicknesses plaguing Seattle. Some insane lady blew a stop sign directly in front of me as I was stepping into the street (because of course she had no time to stop and wait at the sign that said STOP that she was approaching at roughly 35 mph) so I smacked the shit out of her back window with an open palm as she blew past my wife and I. She proceeded to speed around the traffic circle and pull her car over (which turned out to be full of kids) and proceeded to cuss at me for touching her car. I told her to open her fucking eyes and follow the traffic laws or she might kill someone. Why does it feel like the city has her back more than mine?

I see people blow that stop sign and virtually every other one in the surrounding neighborhood I live in just about every damn day. The dangerous, selfish, destructive car culture in this city won’t go away without force. Drivers need less space, less options, and more obstacles to force compliance. There is no other way to curb speed when literal curbs are barely respected as it is.

Call 911 the next time a driver pulls over, make sure you get the license plate.

What I have learned having done this a couple of times over the years? The drivers are often impaired. Make sure the police do a full sobriety test.

Help save lives, get these people off the street.

Thank you for helping share this story. This is Susanna of Seattle Walk Report. I learned today that the car that hit my partner traveled southbound on Melrose Ave from at least E Mercer St to E Pike, and it may have been smoking from the underside or doing something else that made people call 911. Those callers were likely unaware that that vehicle had just been involved in a hit and run. If you called 911 for a smoking car, possibly a black mid-sized SUV, on Sunday 5/25 around 1:10-1:20 PM in this area, or if you have a camera anywhere along Melrose Ave between E Mercer and E Pike, please let me know. My email is [email protected]. Thank you.

Too many people (including policymakers) believe that driving is a right and not a privilege. We need safer street design and real accountability for careless and violent drivers
