One to hospital in 14th Ave E apartment building fire — UPDATE

One person was hospitalized and the Seattle Fire Department was investigating the cause after a Sunday apartment fire on the ninth floor of 14th Ave E’s Capitol Park building.

Seattle Fire was called to the 1971-built Seattle Housing Authority building just before 5 PM to a report of fire and smoke on an upper floor of the 11-story building

One occupant was rescued from the unit and taken to the hospital for treatment.

SFD reported the fire was limited to the unit and extinguished about 30 minutes after their arrival at the scene.

Crews also worked to ventilate the building of smoke.

SFD said it was investigating what caused the fire.

In an unrelated incident, firefighters were also busy Sunday night after a dumpster fire threatened the building home to Neighbours. The just after 8 PM blaze was knocked down without causing significant damages though patrons were forced to clear the building as alarms sounded.

There were no reported injuries.

UPDATE 12:15 PM: SPD says the 14th Ave E apartment fire included an act of heroism from an East Precinct cop:

At about 5:30 p.m., officers responded to a welfare check at an apartment building in the 500 block of 14th Avenue East. When officers reached the ninth floor, they heard a fire alarm coming from one of the units.

Officers received no response and learned from a neighbor the alarm had been sounding for about 30 minutes. Believing the resident could be in danger, officers forced their way inside.

The apartment was filled with smoke; a fire burned on the stovetop. Officers found located a 47-year-old woman inside the apartment and pulled her to safety. The woman appeared confused and disoriented.

The Seattle Fire Department arrived, gained control of the fire, and recommended a brief evacuation of the upper floors due to heavy smoke. Firefighters later determined the building was safe, and residents returned to their units.
