UPDATE 12:45 PM: A Friday afternoon reported firearm incident outside Garfield High School put the campus into “shelter in place”status during the school’s lunch period. The “shelter” situation was not related to the morning’s Rainier Ave shooting. Police were investigating after a 911 caller reported seeing multiple teens carrying handguns and leaving the area. There have been no reports of shots fired and SPD was reportedly in contact with the officer who has been assigned to patrol the school’s parking lot daily.

SPD was continuing to investigate the Rainier shooting at the time of the “shelter in place” warning.
“Detectives determined that the two men got into an altercation on a King County Metro coach prior to the shooting,” SPD reports. “The circumstances leading up to the shooting are still under investigation.”
Police say they were able to quickly take the suspect into custody and recovered a firearm at the Rainier scene.
UPDATE 11/10/2025: SPD detailed the incident at Garfield in this brief:
At 1230 hours, officers responded to a weapon call near a local high school at the intersection of 23rd and Jefferson. A witness reported seeing two male subjects conversing with three female juveniles, one of whom was a current student while the other two were on suspension. The witness observed one of the male subjects brandish a firearm and make a vague threat toward the female juveniles. Following this, one of the subjects left the area heading southbound. One subject was left on a lime scooter, while the other departed in a silver vehicle. The school was placed on a “shelter in place” order until police confirmed that there was no threat to the students. Officers conducted a thorough search for the subjects but were unable to locate them. Once it was determined to be safe, the “shelter in place” order was lifted, and normal activities resumed. The three possible victims were not on the scene when officers arrived, so all this information was coming from a witness. Officers continued with direct patrols until school was dismissed. 241 and 244 were screened.
I voted for harrell so all the stuff happening under Harrell won’t happen
This nonsense at and around our schools combined with the homeless and drug problem ravaging the city, not to mention what filters into our neighborhoods coming from Bailey-Boushay House is exactly why we’ll be selling our house and leaving soon. What was once a wonderful and safe place to live has turned into a den of needles, tents, trash and crime. It’s shameful.
