- Tobacco shop ‘hold-up’: Police arrested an armed suspect who reportedly attempted to hold up Capitol Hill Tobacco before walking out of the store and pointing his firearm at passersby in a bizarre incident Wednesday night in the 1500 block of Broadway. According to the SPD report on the incident, police were called to the area around 8 PM to a report of the man pointing the handgun at people in the street. According to the witness account, police say the suspect entered the shop, placed the firearm on the counter, and asked, “Am I good guy or a bad guy?” According to the report, the suspect then threw a bag on a counter and said, “You know what I want.” The cashier began pulling money from the register but the suspect left without taking any money and “continued to brandish the firearm in the parking lot at people on the street.” Police located the suspect just north of the store and took him into custody for investigation of robbery. There were no reported shots fired and no reported injuries. The handgun was recovered and taken into evidence.
Coffee shop burglary suspect: Capitol Hill’s Ghost Note Coffee has posted images from security video they say shows the suspect who broke into the Bellevue Ave cafe over the weekend while brandishing a handgun:
We got broken into last night. Fortunately, nobody was hurt and it doesn’t appear that anything was taken. If anyone recognizes this person, please let us know. He does appear to have a firearm. He’s also thought to have broken into at least one other business in the area. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
Fortunately, nobody encountered the armed prowler. Police are investigating the break-in.
- Central District stabbing: Police report they made two arrests after a victim who said he was in an alley near S King St unloading groceries Wednesday night just after 7:30 PM was stabbed in the stomach. According to SPD, the victim said an unknown male approached him in the alley and quickly stabbed him. “The victim made it home, where a family member called 911,” SPD said. “Seattle Fire Department medics treated the 23-year-old man at the scene and then transported him to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition.” Police say the victim was able to describe his attackers and officers detained two suspects found nearby. “Officers at the scene determined additional investigation and review of evidence was needed to make an arrest for the stabbing, but both men were booked into King County Jail on other charges – one for a burglary warrant and one for possession of an unlawful weapon,” SPD reports.
- Juvenile robbery arrests: Four teens were arrested near Garfield High School late last month after a series of armed robberies including one of a student near the school, SPD says:
On 01-20-2022 at 1710 hours, officers responded to a robbery in the 300 block of 30th Av S. A juvenile male victim was approached by (3) juvenile female and (1) juvenile male suspects. The male suspect approached the victim and started to rip off the victim’s backpack. When the victim resisted this attempt, the male suspect pulled out a fixed blade knife and threatened him with it. The 3 female suspects then removed the victim’s backpack and went through all his pockets taking other items. These same 4 suspects committed a purse snatch robbery from an elderly female just an hour before this event. Officers located the suspects on 23rd Avenue near Garfield HS. The victims of both prior robberies responded to the scene and positively identified all 4 suspects. These suspects likely committed another robbery earlier in the day at Garfield HS according to numerous witnesses but the juvenile victim in that incident ran off and officers were not able to locate him until they found this victim’s property and phone # in the suspect’s property after arrest. Officers are now working on including this robbery case with the other two robbery cases.
Police say the young suspects were booked into the Youth Service Center for multiple counts of armed robbery. In December, CHS reported on efforts to address safety around the Garfield campus after recent gun and shots fired incidents.
- Encampment shooting: Police say the victim in a Sunday night shooting arrived at the Swedish First Hill emergency room Monday morning around 11 AM saying he had been shot the night before. “The victim said that he was in a tent at the 12th and Jackson encampment when several suspects got into an argument,” the SPD report on the incident reads. “Shortly after this argument the victim said he heard two shots and then felt the gunshot to his foot.” The victim was treated for non-life threatening injuries. Police say the victim said he did not see who shot him. There were no reported arrests.
- 76 station ‘melee’: The suspect in a reported shoplifting incident that turned into a melee inside the 76 gas station at Broadway in Pike required hospitalization for injuries sustained when a store employee retaliated “with his own force to defend himself and to recover his property” after being punched in the face, according to the SPD report on the Monday, 5:30 PM incident. Police say the heavily intoxicated suspect entered the store and was reportedly trying to steal alcohol when he was stopped by the employee and then allegedly punched the employee in the face, leading to the fracas:
The altercation led to a melee inside the store where the suspect bit the victim in the arms and pulled the victim’s hair out. The suspect also sustained facial injury and was bleeding when officers arrived. While at the scene, the suspect swung at two police officers but missed. Officers were able to arrest the suspect without any use-of-force.
Police say Seattle Fire was called to the scene for both the suspect and the victim but report the suspect was “too intoxicated and belligerent for Seattle Fire to screen him.” The suspect was transported to Harborview for medical treatment with a hospital guard. Police said he was to be booked into King County Jail for robbery and two counts of assault once discharged from the hospital.
- First Hill stabbing: Police were investigating a stabbing inside a First Hill apartment Friday night. According to the SPD report on the January 28th incident in the 700 block of 7th Ave, police were called to the scene around 11:30 PM and found the victim seriously wounded with “several additional people inside the apartment.” Officers provided aid to the victim who was eventually transported to Harborview by Seattle Fire medics. There were no immediate arrests and no details about what led to the assault.
- I-5 ramp wire theft: The the I-5 express lanes entrance and exit ramp at 9th and Pike was closed earlier this week after WSDOT reported “a significant amount of wire theft” had left the roadway infrastructure at the ramp severely damaged. WSDOT reported the closure Tuesday morning, saying it could not operate the gates or signage for the ramp without power. The express lanes continued to operate during the closure.
