This report of a Capitol Hill burglar caught red-handed this morning inside a home near 18th Ave and Republican prompted us to roll out an analysis we’ve been working on examining January’s crime totals. We’ll post the complete report soon but here’s a look at recent Capitol Hill residential burglaries.
In all, we have found reports of 20 home burglaries on the Hill in the first 6 weeks of 2010 — more than $14,000 worth of cash, jewelry and electronics have been reported stolen in these crimes. This map from SeattleCrime’s editor archives shows the approximate location for each of these incidents.
Note: Some of the more than 20 mapped incidents on the map above are classified as residential burglaries because they are car prowls that happened to occur inside a parking garage. These incidents are not included in the totals in this post.
More than half of the burglaries resulted in nothing being stolen — only damage to doors or windows sometimes or entryways to the homes found open in others. But others are costly including the more than $2,500 in items reported stolen — including a MacBook and a Verizon Droid — in this January burglary on Malden Ave E. Here are a few more incidents of note:
1/30/10 Bellevue Ave E: $1,500
V/ advised that sometime
between the hours of 1630 hours on 01/29/2010, and 1100 hours on 01/302010,
an unknown person, without permission broke into his recording studio,
located in the basement of the above mentioned address. The unknown
suspect, unscrewed multiple screws that secured the lock latch to the door.
2/1/10 Summit Ave: $315
When V/ left her apartment she stated she had left her windows open. When
returned to her apartment, around 1700 hrs on 1-31-10, she discovered a few
things missing. also noticed that the windows she had left open were
now closed.
1/26/10 17th Ave E: $2,000
reports that his garage door opener malfunctioned last night,
causing his garage door, which opens into an alley, to remain open
overnight. Sometime during the night, an unknown suspect entered the garage
and took two large carts which they use for hauling gardening supplies and
trash cans to take several bicycles, several pairs of skis, ski poles, two
sets of golf clubs and numerous gardening tools from the garage.
Looking at the bigger picture, SPD recently released the yearly crime statistics they compile — overall, SPD is reporting a 7% increase in crime in the city including a 3% jump in burglary. We’ll be looking more closely at the 2009 — including full break-outs for Capitol Hill soon on CHS.
