Break-in damages Hugo House, thieves take Volunteer Park donation box after Pride Picnic

OK, knucklehead thieves of Capitol Hill, quit damaging nice places. Can’t you go steal some copper wiring or something? Here are two details of break-ins this week involving well-loved Capitol Hill targets.

First, the Stranger is reporting that the Hugo House was broken into overnight:

Last night’s break-in occurred at 2:00 a.m., triggering the non-profit’s security system, which alerted police. A suspect or suspects were reportedly arrested. But at this point, it’s unclear if anything was taken from Hugo House. “We’re taking a close look at everything now,” says McGuigan. “We have a glass vase with about $30 in cash donations that wasn’t touched, so that’s a good sign. If you’re breaking into a nonprofit, you’re probably desperate for cash.”

In other neighborhood thievery that might make you momentarily consider transitioning Seattle to a fascist police state, CHS has learned that, following Sunday’s Pride Picnic, three thieves unbolted the donation box at the front door of the Volunteer Park Conservatory and made off with the loot, donation box and all.

Because of the extra visitors brought in by the picnic, the donation box was stuffed with probably hundreds of dollars, a representative from the Conservatory told us. The saddest thing for the Conservatory, though, isn’t the cash, he said — the donation box was specially made and the Conservatory’s guest registry was attached. Supporters of the Conservatory are also in the midst of trying to raise millions of dollars to complete an overhaul of the nearly 100-year-old building.

We’re told there is surveillance video of the thieves at work and SPD has the video.

I live on one of the nice streets just east of Volunteer Park. I have had car prowls over the years, when inadvertently a car was left unlocked. In the last couple of days, I had parked an older Mercedes on the street, only to find that someone had broken off the hood ornament. I have a new one on order that will cost around $50.00 and take time to figure out how to install. This sort of gratuitous behavior is almost non-noteworthy. It is disheartening and old. Thefts and tagging are more than disrespectful. I have no answers other than good parenting and perhaps public shaming when small level thieves and vandals are caught.
