CHS Pics: Foodie farmers market debuts at Mt. Zion

A short 7-week bounty of farm fresh goods was celebrated Wednesday morning near 20th and Madison’s Mt. Zion church as the Seattle Wholesale Market made its 2011 debut. We wrote about the program to better connect small provider farms with local buyers and restaurants here. The market will take place Wednesday mornings through August 31st. Buyers must represent commercial ventures as the unit sales are wholesale in scope — we’re talking boxes of greens, not a head of lettuce. On the first day of the central Seattle debut for the program, it was mostly an opportunity for local buyers to meet some of the providers as a representative from PCC made the rounds and a provider of school food services chatted with the berry farmer. As part of the market, fresh produce and meat is also being donated to Mt. Zion’s meal programs to help feed low income and senior community members.
