Screen Shot 2013-08-03 at 10.28.39 AMThis week, the crow learned it still rains in Seattle, occasionally. What did you learn?

FEIYA, 29

Feiya 1

What are you up to tonight?
I just finished going to a dance improv performance from Velocity, down on Broadway.

What line of work are you in?
I do help documentation.

What’s the most exciting thing you’ve done this summer?
Just this last weekend, I went backpack camping and I hiked 24 miles.

24 miles? That’s almost a marathon. Did you do this all in one day?
No, it was 5 miles on Saturday, Sunday 14 miles, and Monday another 5 miles out.

Where did you hike?
Thunder Creek, in the North Cascade Park.

When you’re not hiking or working, what do you like to do?
One of my friends has a ā€œmake stuff nightā€ every Monday night, and I like to try and go to that a lot. And Ray Gun Lounge on Thursdays has story gaming, and I go to that.

Screen Shot 2013-07-20 at 3.49.07 PMPsst. Want a CHS Crow tattoo? You know you do.

Ā RYAN, 31

Ryan1What are you up to tonight?
I’m just hanging out with friends.

Do you live on the Hill?
No, I’m actually from Reno, Nevada.

ā€œThe Biggest Little City in the Worldā€?
More like, ā€œThe Biggest Little Shithole in the World.ā€

So, I assume your life is just like on that show ā€œReno 911ā€?
Yes, only we don’t have palm trees. You’ll notice on the show, there are palm trees, because it’s actually filmed in L.A. or wherever.

What brought you to Seattle?
My best friend and life partner. Continue reading

CHS Crow | Julio, Brittany & Donovan — ‘I was in a punk band for a long time, but now I’m solo’

Screen Shot 2013-06-22 at 9.56.33 PMThis week, the crow learned where to score good vegan food up north.

What did you learn?

JULIO, 22

Julio1What are you up to tonight?
I’m with my friend shopping, and I’m going to go to the show upstairs [The Highline on Broadway]. I’m one of the promoters here.

Do you have any good shows coming up?
On July 7, I have this show at Barboza, which is below Neumos. There are six bands on the bill and only $8, or $10 at the door.

Spoken like a true promoter! Are you a Seattle native?
No, I’m from Miami, Florida. I live on the North End now.

Do you hang out on the Hill very often?
I do, as much as I can.

Other than promoting shows, what line of work are you in?
I was selling cars for a while, but I really love booking shows. I love helping musicians.

What was the hardest part about being a car salesmen?
Convincing people that I wasn’t an asshole or dishonest. It was hard because I was young, too.

Are you a musician yourself?
I was in a punk band for a long time, but now I’m solo.

What are some of your influences?
A.F.I., Incubus, Misfits, Glenn Danzig. I’m also a huge fan of Davey Havok because he’s straight edge and vegan and doesn’t consume any animal products. I really look up to that.

Are you straight edge?
I was for seven years, then something happened to me and I broke edge, but I want to go back to it. I’ve been vegetarian for ten years. In Seattle they support that a lot—there are a lot of vegan and vegetarian restaurants.

CHS Crow | Jacqui, Teppei & Julia — ‘There are the same type of people, only more of them’

Screen Shot 2013-06-09 at 7.46.55 AMThe crow will have to try out this whole wrapped rock thing.

Ā JACQUI, 19

8997273152_f0450247de_bWhat are you up to today?
I’m wrapping rocks and selling them for food and money and other things.

Are you a native Seattleite?
No, I was selling magazines across country, and Washington was beautiful, so I stayed.

Selling magazines across the country—how does that work?
It’s like a door-to-door salesman. You walk up to somebody, and you ask them how they are, and if they’re nice and friendly, you sell them a magazine.

So, it’s like interviewing random strangers—only, I promise not to sell you any magazines. How did you get into wrapping rocks [to make jewelry]?
It’s a hobby. It calms you down. It wasn’t really for profit, but I got told that it could be for profit. I figure if you can make money for it, why not.

Where are you from originally?
From Montana. Missoula, Montana. Continue reading

Ā SILVANA, 30

What are you up to today?
My friends are in from D.C., and they have a garden there, so I’m showing them my garden.

What are you planting this year?
Everything. Two of the cooler things we have is an artichoke plant and a kiwi.

This may be my gardening ignorance talking, but I always think of kiwi as a tropical thing.
It’s what I think of, too. These are a little different from the ones you see in the store, you just bite into them, and you don’t have to peel them. Ours are mate dyed, and I don’t know which ones we have, male or female.

Um, I hate to admit this, but I have no idea what ā€œmate dyedā€ plants are. Could you explain that?
Well, you need male and female to produce fruit. Kind of like humans…

This is new to me. I went to a public schools in the South, so I think teachers were forbidden to talk about fruit & vegetable sex. Do you have to go down to Babeland to get stuff to help them out?
Hey, there’s an idea!

And you play some Barry White for the kiwi?
Yeah, they weren’t feeling it before that.

How long have you had this garden?
About three years. This space used to be a parking lot. I wasn’t the original planter, but I was involved early on.

Have you had other city gardens before this one?
No, it’s my first one.

CHS Crow | Eden, Rich & Austin — ‘I’m gonna go home and watch cartoons’

Screen shot 2013-05-04 at 3.13.02 PMThis week, the crow learned the value of clear Jell-O, everybody eats Top Ramen alone, sometimes, and why Tacoma is super gay.

What did you learn?

Ā EDEN, 26

edenWhat are you up to on this beautiful evening?
I’m gonna go down to the QFC and get the ingredients for some Jell-o shots.

I find that Jell-o is the best hospital cafeteria food to use as a booze delivery system. What do you think is the best flavor of Jell-o for Jell-o shots?
The clear one.

There’s a ā€œclearā€ flavor? Is that like ā€œredā€ flavor?
It’s actually lemon, but it comes out clear. You can add some triple sec and make it like a kamikaze shot.

Sounds like a recipe for a party, literally and metaphorically! What’s the occasion?
A friend of mine is having a housewarming here at The Loft, so we’re gonna make some Jell-o shots for her party tomorrow.

What line of work are you in?
I’m a software developer, at Amazon.

Do you live on the Hill?
I actually live down on First Hill next to Ba Bar. Continue reading

CHS Crow | Sandra, Chris & Wendy — ‘I’ve been hanging out with a lot of stand-up comedy folks lately’

Screen shot 2013-04-20 at 12.35.17 PMThis week, the crow learned this bird isn’t the only one to eat social meat.

Ā SANDRA, 39

sandra1What are you up to today?
I just came down to grab a bite to eat. Unfortunately, my sister is in the hospital, so I’m spending the day with her.

This is a vegan restaurant (Plum Cafe, on 15th). Are you vegan?
Well, I am gluten-free, and have been for about five years. I usualy try to find vegan restaurants because usually they’ll have a gluten-free options on the menu.

Since gluten isn’t an animal product, it’s interesting that there are so many more gluten-free options in vegan restaurants…
Sometimes people who are vegan are more open to the idea of gluten-free, and alternative diets. I’m not vegetarian, but at home we do meat-free Monday through Fridays.

Why meat on the weekends?
Usually if you’re going out, or to someone’s house, it makes it a lot easier to have more options. Also, I do like to have meat every now and again, but I don’t like to eat it every day. Continue reading
