Debora Juarez was elected to the Seattle City Council twice.

Tuesday, she began her third term after the council appointed her to represent North Seattle and complete the open term through November 2026.

ā€œRepresenting District 5 was a great honor when I was elected twice and for some reason this feels much more emotional,ā€ Juarez said after taking the Oath of Office following Tuesday’s appointment. ā€œFor that I thank you. I raise my hands.ā€

Juarez joined the first district-based council after electionĀ in 2016. Six years later, she was part of a ripple of council incumbentsĀ opting not to run to keep their seatsĀ after a contentious term that included COVID-19, the 2020 protests, and withering attacks fromĀ District 3Ā representativeĀ Kshama Sawant. ā€œI inherited the proposal and I made mistake about not stopping that proposal,ā€ Murray said Tuesday night, admitting in front of the crowd gathered for aĀ fundraiser at Sole RepairĀ for theĀ Standing Rock Sioux Reservation fight against theĀ Dakota Access PipelineĀ thatĀ the city did not use its “racial equity toolkitā€ to evaluate the North Precinct project.

Thursday, the mayor attempted a correction.Ā  Continue reading
