With the buildout on Capitol Hill still fully underway, the glory Friday will go to Ballard as the first Seattle opening of Portland-based ice cream chain Salt and Straw. But we finally know when the new E Pike shop will open — and we’ve got a first peek at some of the 17 flavors you’ll find when it does.
Friday’s S&S Seattle debut on Ballard Ave is appropriate — “Seven years ago, Kim Malek sold her Ballard home, held a garage sale and moved to Portland,” MyBallard reports. The rest is PNW ice cream history.
The E Pike shop on the southwest corner of the Pike Motorworks building at Pike and Boylston from the Malek cousins — Kim and Tyler — is slated to debut a week later on Friday, February 16th. Here’s a preview of what you’ll be lining up for:
The Seattle scoop shops will feature a menu of 17 flavors including beloved classic flavors like Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, Almond Brittle with Salted Ganache and Honey Lavender. In addition to the favorite flavors found in all Salt & Straw shops, a menu of flavors has been crafted especially for Seattle by co-founder and head ice cream maker, Tyler Malek. Local flavors will highlight collaborations with regional artisans: Elm Coffee and Westland Whiskey, Beecher’s Cheese, Ellenos Yogurt, and Rachel’s Ginger Beer. Guests are encouraged to sample as many flavors as they would like, as they get to know the Salt & Straw ever-evolving ice cream menu and explore flavors they didn’t know they’d love.
In March when CHS first wrote about Salt and Straw’s Capitol Hill plans, Tyler Malek told us about the company’s emphasis on local partners and special ingredients. Expect the flavor menu to turn over regularly. Single scoops will cost $4.95. And, yeah, if you “can stay unapologetically positive in a high volume & customer-facing position for 6-8 hours,” they’re hiring.
The Capitol Hill Salt and Straw opening will mark the second ice cream addition for the neighborhood in 2018. In January, Full Tilt and its pinball machines brought their game to 15th Ave E.
Salt and Straw Capitol Hill is slated to open February 16th at 714 E Pike. You can learn more at saltandstraw.com.
