Neighborhood Election Parties

Alice asked a great question about where to watch the election results in and around Capitol Hill. We had some suggestions in the comments and I want to add a few others as well.

Victrola is now offering beer & wine ($1 off) – viewing starts at 7 pm

Volunteer Park Cafe Chef Ericka Burke is cooking up a family-style Italian dinner with election results on an enormous projection-screen TV. $25 (kids $10). RSVP required: 5:30 pm start

The War Room:JD and Red Bull cocktails for only $4. Big screen TVs. Plus free Caffé Vita coffee and Molly Moon ice cream! 5 p.m. onward

CHS supporter and a great place to eat veggie pigs in a blanket, Central Cinema offers an 18 foot screen – the party starts at 6 pm

Neumos and Moe Bar are throwing a party with Good Magazine and the People for Chris Gregiore – 3 pm doors for Moe Bar and 5 pm for Neumos

CHS supporter and a great place to drink Elysian Pumpkin Ale on draft, Bottleneck is hosting a party starting at 4 pm (everyone who votes gets a free shortbread cookie from Little Rae’s Bakery)

Neighborhood stalwart Comet Tavern is hosting an election party starting at 4 pm

Northwest Film Forum offers two cinema screens and the party starts at 6 pm – suggested donation of $10 to raise funds for the Strawberry Theatre Workshop

Those interested on a local slant can gather either at Town Hall with Knute Berger or with Goldie’s group Drinking Liberally at Montlake Alehouse

If you want to see the election results served up with music, try the Baltic Room (not sure what time the party starts but for the debates – I saw that the Baltic Room has been open as early as 5 pm)

Fundraising for John & Summit Park – An Update

If you’ve been following CHS closely, you’ve already read jseattle’s article on this subject, New Math for a New Park. In case you haven’t: Parks is planning to build a park at John and Summit (the Diamond Parking Lot across from the Olive Way Starbucks). They’re over $150,000 short of the money they need to build the park as it is presently designed. The community was faced with a decision – raise the money and get an awesome park or take a grassy knoll as a consolation prize. The community chose option number one, and Unpaving Paradise was born.

And now for the update: UP just had its last Drag Charity Bingo night at Cafe Metropolitain (thanks again Giggles and Marc!), so now we’re onto Phase Two of community fundraising – The Shinka Tea Product Promotion. Delicious tea & desserts, and 10-20% of the proceeds go toward the park-to-be – it’s like having your cake and eating it too…literally, if you decide to order some cake.

On our to-do list is setting up more community-partnership fundraisers, applying for grants (including the infamous Neighborhood Matching Grant), and planning a community depave of the parking lot for sometime in August 2009. Interested? Contact us at [email protected].

RPZ Policy Review: late-breaking idea. Thoughts?

(Message from S-DOTbolding and links added by Andrew. See this page for general RPZ info and this one for details of the RPZ Policy Review)

SDOT is making final recommendations on the Residential Parking Program ( RPZ) Policy Review.  We have a late-breaking idea and would like your feedback on it.  By noon tomorrow if possible!  Because the time is short, Mary Catherine Snyder and I are trying to call/email a number of people from various areas to get a range of thoughts and responses.

Our original recommendation was to limit the number of permits allowed – in the highest use areas a household would be limited to 1 per household (examples Cascade, Pike Pine, Capitol Hill), moderate use areas would be limited to 2 permits (examples, Wallingford, University West), and in low use areas or 4 permits (Madison Valley, Licton Springs, Roosevelt).  All permits would be $45.

The new proposal is to not limit permits in any zone, cap all areas at 8, and to have permits escalate in cost:  first 2 @ $45, next 2 @ $90, next 2 @ $135, last 2 @ $180.  (I assume the low income rate of $10 would continue throughout.)

If you would think about this and either email or call me, I would be very grateful.

Regards,
Margo

Slacker voting on Capitol Hill

Election Day has become Election Week. With 90%+ in the state voting by mail this year, tomorrow is likely the end of regular old-fashioned voting as we know it. We’ll be out and about to get photos and stories from the day but right now, we’re here to address the slackers. You already have your plan on where to party and watch the results. But according to the county, 46% of the absentee ballots in legislative district 43 have already been received.

Well done, early voters. For the rest of you — er, us — here’s some info that might help finish our deed of democracy. The key: Don’t just drop your ballot in the mailbox. You waited. Pay the price for democracy and take it to the right place. Fortunately, you have many to choose from:

  • At this point, we’re not taking any chances so our CHS ballots are going to be dropped off at a local polling location. Here’s the google app that shows polling locations in your neighborhood — in this example, where you’d go if you lived at the Broadway Post Office.
  • If you don’t take it to a polling location, you need to have your ballot postmarked by Tuesday for it to count. One way to make sure that happens — take it to your nearest Post Office:
    101 BROADWAY E
    1463 E REPUBLICAN ST
    1110 23RD AVE
  • King County 24-hour drop-boxes are also available for absentee ballots until 8p Tuesday night — including one downtown on 5th Ave.
  • Finally, here’s what to do if your ballot never arrived. State doesn’t give you much help, yes? Maybe take the provisional ballot route.

Sexual Assault at Swedish – Suspect Sought

Cross-posting this from CDNews since people might recognize this guy from somewhere on the hill.

Police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect in a sexual assault that occurred at Swedish hospital on Saturday.   He is described as a hispanic male, 40s, who was wearing a sweater with horizontal red, blue, and green stripes.   The security camera image attached here shows him in a motorized wheelchair, although police say that he may also be able to walk.

Police spokesman Officer Mark Jamieson says that the suspect entered a hospital room early on Saturday morning, sexually assaulted the female victim, and then left the scene.   SPD was later notified and sexual assault detectives are now handling the investigation.

Officials believe that the image is a very good likeness of the suspect, and urge anyone with information to call 911 or the department’s Sexual Assault Unit at 206-684-5575.
