Blick Art preparing for April opening – Plus, street party planned for Elliott Bay

Shelves are going up and inventory is about to be moved in as Blick Art Materials prepares to take over on the corner of Broadway and Pine. The retailer will replace EveryDay Music which is joining Elliott Bay Book Co. on 10th Ave next to Oddfellows Cafe. Some more information on that opening, by the way, is below.

According to the signs, Blick is opening in April — and, they’re hiring. We spoke with Blick manager Larry Aldrich about the new store. He said Blick is looking forward to being part of the neighborhood. “We’re excited to be part of the evolving Capitol Hill,” Aldrich said. He said the store has already hired about 15 people — many of them Cornish art students.

When we first reported about Blick replacing EveryDay Music, we called the company a “a chain with stores in 15 states. Blick will compete with Utrecht Art Supplies on Pike. Utrecht, by the way, is a 20-state chain.”

A Blick employee commented on the post with more information about Blick:

Just to set the record straight, Blick Art Materials is a family-owned company that currently operates 30 retail stores in 15 cities across the U.S. The largest distributor of fine art materials in the country, Blick serves its customers through three channels of distribution: retail, catalog and the Web (dickblick.com). A long-standing advocate for the arts and art education, Blick will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2010, and looks forward to joining the art community in Seattle.

Blick’s new store can be found at 1604 Broadway.

Meanwhile, over on 10th Ave, Elliott Bay Book Co.’s April 15th opening is rapidly approaching. You can follow along via their flickr group where they’re posting construction update pictures. We’re also hearing that there are plans afoot to close down 10th Ave for a community celebration welcoming Elliott Bay to the Hill. More on that soon.
