Capitol Hill food+drink: Restaurants & lounges for sale, Marination ready, Gyro Cafe, too

This is an old-school food and drink notes edition — just like the old days, full of little bits and bites from the Hill’s restaurant and bar scene. In other words, for the first time in weeks, there’s not another new place with plans to open up on the Hill. That we know anything about, that is. Got a tip? Fire way [email protected]

Apparently it’s the season for selling your Capitol Hill food and drink business — and for new owners. Here are the notes:

  • Show of hands. How many of you knew the Asian restaurant on E Pike near 11th across the street from the Wildrose, et al, is called the Oasis Cafe? Business is for sale — $71k for the restaurant, $900,000 for the commercial condo it calls home:

Oasis Cafe is located in a commercial condo in one of the “Hottest” areas on Capitol Hill. Great visibility and corner location. Leases for $4,467 mo plus $528 NNN. Type 1 Hood; Beer and Wine. Commercial Condo also available-see CBA 486609.

  • E Pike not your style? This 14th Ave “Award winning Tapas/Latin Restaurant” can be yours for $180,000 and assumption of lease. Listing says Mezza’s owner is moving.
  • The space Travelers calls home has been for lease for months now. If the Craigslist posting expires, the two retail spaces that Travelers currently takes up can be had for a combined $9,100 a month.
  • Sidenote: Those candied fennel sprinkles atop CHS’s delicious salted licorice sundae Sunday at Molly Moon’s? From Travelers. It all connects.
  • And, yes, Charlie’s on Broadway is still for sale. Price has dropped $40 grand for the business started way back in ’76 (1976, wise guy.)
  • $149,000 will get you this “well located” and “cozy cocktail lounge” established way back in 2007. Remember, with blind listings, it’s not a game, per se, as we’re talking about people’s businesses and lives here — but, we know there are also few things as compelling as a good local business mystery.
  • New owners? Rosebud’s liquor application lists a new company on the paperwork: Thanks Mom, LLC helmed by partners Todd Nordahl, Daniel Varnado, and Deron Bartells. The group takes over from longtime owners Robert Sondheim and John Busey. On paper, at least.
  • Also getting an apparent ownership overhaul, Jup Jup Jup’s location is now listed as Artid Siam Thai, according to the liquor board.
  • Marination Station debuts on Friday. Our preview here.
  • And we can almost promise with 98% certainty this grand opening won’t be one our Yogurtland premature excitations. Yland should be open today or Tuesday. Sorry to disappoint you so.
  • Skillet Diner says opening “around May 10th or so.”
  • Speaking of Skillet, Bottleneck’s annual Kentucky Derby bash will again feature the streetfood trailer.
  • Taylor Shellfish says its store at Melrose Market has a “late May/early June” due date.
  • Gyro Cafe is also about to be born on 15th Ave E across from Group Health. We told you about the incoming eatery from two first-time restaurant operators here. We also told you about their new neighbors, here. Gyro tells CHS they could open this week or next depending on how hiring goes. Need a job? Get your butt in there. CHS is hungry.
  • Pike Street Fish Fry has a new logo. Think it plays better in NYC?
  • Former CHS contributor Shalini Gujavarty writes about a longtime farmers market vendor who lost her place for the Broadway market in 2011.
  • Local Groupon-like service with a non-profit giving component Ideal Seattle is featuring Pike/Pine businesses this week.
  • Presser from Poquitos says they are back in the lunch business as of now after shutting down the offering shortly after opening to re-tool. The media release doesn’t mention the re-start — simply says they now offer lunch — but does include some hand UI. Basically, if you want to eat lunch, order at the counter, then grab a seat. Unless you want to eat in the bar. There, you get menu service. And some sweet sounding lunchtime libations.
  • Early reminder: Community meeting to discuss Volunteer Park Cafe’s application for a change of use permit from City Hall is next Monday, April 25th at Stevens Elementary.
  • CHS is planning a social dinner with a few fellow Seattle hyperlocalists later this week and found Seattle Restaurant Week hoopla quite useful. Automatically cut those options from the list.
  • Posterous dude liked Rock Box. A lot.
  • Blue Moon wants ideas for a quintessential Capitol Hill burger. We say start with a vegan patty and add hipster jokes from there.

I am surprised to see plastic up in the windows at the Terra Plata space. The equipment that was delivered must be for the new restaurant. Now if someone can just rent out the basement space the project will be completed.

Didn’t Travelers just put in a dinner menu with longer hours? Hope they’re not closing up – a nice fixture of the neighborhood. Neat stuff too.

Does any one know if the Capital Club is still up for sale?

A few random thoughts:

*I’m also surprised about Travellers. Seems like it’s busy for food on weekends. Maybe it’s the other end of the business that’s suffering.

*Doesn’t the space where Jup Jup Jup is located undergo a name change (still Thai) at least once a year? I swear it’s been at least a half a dozen different Thai restaurants in my 7-8 years on the Hill.

*I’m curious about the Rosebud transition…

I went to Meza last night and asked the owner about the sale – he said he’s found a buyer and the new owner is already helping out around the place. So at least for now it sounds like it’ll be business as usual.

had lunch at Travelers today and asked about the for rent situation. Here’s the info I got from an employee who seemed to know what was going on:

They have been operating without a lease for a couple of years – the relatively new owner wants much more rent than they are paying so won’t give them a lease. So basically they are there month to month unless or until the landlord is willing to negotiate what Travelers considers to be a fair lease with them. If the landlord finds a new tenant willing to pay the rent he wants Travelers is out of there. They do have a new space on Beacon Hill where they are doing the cooking for the Cap Hill restaurant and may open a restaurant there in addition to the Cap Hill site. But the Beacon Hill space would not accommodate the store.

While you wait…you can get an awesome gyro at Zaina on Cherry St, just off Pioneer Sq.

You will not ever taste one as good as what they have a Gyro Cafe on 15th. I was there for the soft opening….woke up the next morning craving to go back for another….delicious…what can I say…
