The lights will be on at Bobby Morris playfield Saturday and Sunday nights in an effort Seattle Parks says is intended to dissuade the use of illegal fireworks that can ruin the artificial turf fields:
The lights will be turned on to discourage the use of fireworks. Fireworks are illegal in the city of Seattle and will destroy the artificial turf on the fields or surrounding facilities. The approximate replacement cost for the synthetic surface based on per average full-size field (110,000 square feet) is $1.2 million. All the fields have been renovated in the past several years and benefit field users including players of soccer, football, baseball, Ultimate Frisbee and lacrosse.
Parks says the field lights will be turned on at approximately 8:30 PM both nights and most will be turned off at either 10 PM or 11 PM depending on the field. The fields will also be monitored by security from 9 PM to 4 AM.
Fireworks are illegal in the city and you’re a bit of an asshole for lighting them off in the middle of the dense central city where plenty of neighbors around Cal Anderson or the Garfield campus would rather not hear your bangs and explosions as you play with fire. Find a new way to celebrate Independence Day, thanks.

Heard bottle rockets last night. Please please please don’t tempt fate neighbors! A lot of us share the nostalgia of fireworks but it’s just. Not. Worth it
To add on to this, these fireworks that are being set off in parks are also extremely inconsiderate to the residents living there, our unsheltered neighbors experiencing homelessness. Can you imagine trying to get a restful night’s sleep with a mortar exploding a few inches away from your home? It’s ruthless and uncalled for.
Um, that happens to people who live anywhere within a block or two of the parks…
And how about veterans and others with PTSD, and also pets that are traumatized ?? There are more people affected than residents living in the park.
Good point! A lot of homeless veterans too.
Next, can the Blue Angles just fly over the water somewhere instead of buzzing cities? It’s pretty annoying to suddenly lose you sense of hearing while doing something due to essentially an advertisement, every year.
Year after year, for decades, some people complain about the Blue Angels. I don’t like them either, but they are here to stay.
Fireworks have been a tradition for what, maybe over 200 years? It’s just one night all year people. And its on the calendar. Its a celebration. Let’s just be ok with it for one night. Canceling that celebration would suggest canceling the cannon after Sounder goals and Seahawk touchdowns. Maybe mute the outdoor orchestras too. C’mon. It’s just one night of celebrating, something we all deserve after that last 16 months of Hell.
How about celebrating with some other noise that doesn’t burn down houses…… after 16 months of hell no one deserves even more… Some years maybe the danger isn’t so extreme, but it’s been very hot and very dry.
soooo… where was the security?
