Shootout at Broadway and Pike sends one to hospital

One person was taken to the hospital after an early Sunday morning shootout at Pike and Broadway.

Police tell CHS officers recovered more than two dozen shell casings near the scene at the 76 gas station and on Broadway near Pine and also Pike where the shootout went down just before 4 AM.

One male believed to be in his 20s was taken to Harborview by a private vehicle after being struck in the leg. His injuries were reported as non-life threatening. There were no other reported injuries.

Hours earlier, the streets of Pike/Pine were clogged with revelers celebrating a Saturday night in the midst of Seattle’s reopening. Police say the gun violence at Pike and Broadway started with an altercation in the gas station lot. At least two cars were reported speeding from the scene.

Broadway was closed in both directions during the investigation.

SPD’s Violence Prevention Unit was called to the shooting but nobody from the unit was able to immediately respond, according to East Precinct dispatch updates.

The lifting of capacity restrictions and restoration of late night hours has more feet and eyes on the streets around Capitol Hill. In general, police say that’s better for neighborhood safety. But the return of nightlife crowds also brings reports of incidents that had become rarities on the Hill like late night street fights and muggings.

Early Friday morning around 3:30 AM, a man reported he was robbed at gunpoint with a weapon “described as an Uzi” after he withdrew $200 from an ATM at Broadway and John. Police say the man lost his wallet and phone in the heist as a vehicle sped near the victim after his ATM visit, and two suspects demanded the cash.

Police were also busy around the nightlife zone earlier Sunday morning before the shootout. Around 1:30 AM, police were called to the 800 block of 12th Ave where a man complained of a minor knife wound in an altercation with at least two suspects who he said slashed the tires on his Corvette “because it had an American flag on it,” according to SPD radio updates. Police were looking for the suspects last seen entering a nearby residential building.

During the stabbing investigation, police were also called to a large fight nearby. When officers arrived, they found a lot of people gathered but not fighting. Just “a lot of singing and dancing,” one officer reported via East Precinct radio.

People shooting each other is the american pass time. It’s so great that we have so many guns. What could possibly go wrong.

Seattle has a small number of guns compared to other places. Many of the safest places in the US have extremely high rates of personal gun ownership.

Yes, Seattle does. And, all things relative, it is a rather safe place. However, with regard to gun crime, it is a much less safer than it was, say 5 years ago.
You’re citing legal gun ownership but -newsflash- most criminals don’t legally own guns!

Besides, show me these many safe places with high gun ownership. Like Alabama?!

Statistically, places with stricter gun laws, especially cities, have less gun crime. Even Chicago, where gun crime is rampant, many experts believe would be that much worse with lax gun laws. Objective statistics seem to bear this out with a fair amount of consistency.

Which experts think that gun crime would be worse in Chicago without strict gun laws? As you said, the criminals are not heeding the laws anyway.

These clowns could have hurt someone too, just indiscriminately firing guns in a city dangerous.
