Seattle’s 911 dispatch lit up with calls late Thursday afternoon after gunfire in a parking lot at a still busy Garfield High School.
There were no reported injuries in the incident reported just after 4:30 PM and students on campus including a basketball team busy at practice were ordered to shelter in place as police investigated the incident.
According to East Precinct scanner updates, multiple callers reported gunshots and people fleeing the 23rd Ave campus just after 4:30 PM.
Police arrived at the school and found the shooting scene in the parking lot north of the school’s football field on the northeast edge of the campus. A resident at a house a block away from the shooting scene reported a bullet had crashed through their window.
One witness said a gunman who appeared to be a teenager opened fire in the faculty parking lot and appeared to be targeting at least two other teens who fled the area. Police found around 30 shell casings spread around the lot but no signs that anyone had been hit. It was not immediately clear how many guns were involved in the shooting.
Police were in contact with the school principal and were working to get security video of the incident.
The armed teen was last reported fleeing the area eastbound on E Jefferson. Police were also seeking information on a vehicle seen leaving the area around the time of the shooting.
There were no reported immediate arrests.
UPDATE 12/3/2021 8:45 AM: In a message sent to the school’s families late Thursday night, new Garfield principal Dr. Tarance Hart addressed the shooting and confirmed the brief lockdown on campus. Hart says extra security from the district will be in place on the campus Friday and counselors will be available. “I know that this information is troubling and difficult to hear,” Hart writes. “Please take time to talk to your student about the importance of safety and always being aware of their surroundings. It is also important that everyone reports any suspicious activity at all times.” The full message is below.
Dear Garfield Community –
I want to update you on a circumstance that occurred late today near the school campus.
Around 4:30 this afternoon, the sound of several gun shots could be heard on the campus.
No one was hurt or injured. There were some students and some staff still at the school at the time, so we did enter a shelter-in-place protocol. This protocol was lifted after approximately 20 minutes at the direction of the Seattle Police Department.
Seattle Police were called immediately and upon their arrival they did not report finding any suspects. However, an
investigation has been opened and the school’s video footage will be shared with SPD should any pertinent evidence be uncovered. There will be additional personnel from the district’s Safety & Security Department at the campus tomorrow, and we will be continuing to work with Seattle Police as the investigation begins. Counselors also will be available to support students and staff members as needed.
I am available to answer any questions you may have. I know that this information is troubling and difficult to hear. Please take time to talk to your student about the importance of safety and always being aware of their surroundings. It is also important that everyone reports any suspicious activity at all times.
Thanks to students and staff for providing valuable information to Seattle Police. And I’d like to give a special thanks to staff members who were both helpful and responsive. We will be updating you as more pertinent information is available to share. But again, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
In Partnership,
Dr. Tarance HartPrincipal
UPDATE 12/3/2021 9:45 AM: SPD says the incident is one of five overnight shootings it is investigating around the city.
The SPD update says it appears likely the Garfield incident was a shootout involving at least two people firing guns. “Officers found shell casings near a door on the school’s campus, and another set nearby, likely indicating two people had exchanged gunfire,” the brief on the investigation reads. “Police found evidence the gunmen had fired around three dozen shots in the incident.”
SPD is looking for help investigating the spate of gun violence:
If you have any information about these shootings, or any other details that can help police deter gun violence in our community, please call the SPD Violent Crimes Tip Line at 206-233-5000.

Montalke and East Broadway anti-Sawant types don’t seem to care about the gunshots in their neighborhood. They care more about the scary sight of a drug needle than anything like this.
I email Sawant after every shooting here in the CD asking what she’s doing to help keep our community safe. The most I’ve gotten was an out of office message.
Lots of those people have kids who attend Garfield, so you are wrong on so many levels.
What makes you say this? I am anti-Sawant but have a kid who attends Garfield and I care very much about shootings there. I also care about rampant public drug usage. I care about both.
Yes, Sawant has been all over the problem of gun violence in her district and has in fact been deeply focused on pressing issues in D3. I’ve received emails every day for the last month talking about just these matters. NOT!!!
All I receive from Sawant are fundraising emails. Never an email about our District.
I’m on email lists of other council members and they send regular detailed updates about what is happening in their district and what legislation they are working on.
All Sawant does is movement building and call anyone that disagrees with her a racist right-wing corporate billionaire.
Huh? This is gibberish.
Born in the CD, comments like yours reinforce that Sawant and Trump followers are flip sides of the same coin, demonizing fellow citizens and neighbors to stoke resentment. As a CD resident living near Garfield, I am concerned about the prevalence of gun violence *and* drug needles, both being deadly threats to anyone who lives and attends school here.
I think “Born in the CD” posts to drive up traffic and we all fall for it :) because it is so outlandish.
Bulldog Family! You hit the nail on the head. Left can not exist without the Right. Both are against civility.
To say that lucrative open drug markets; ‘does not lead to gang violence’, goes against written history.
So wrong! I heard those gunshots. My kid attends Garfield. I have asked CM Sawant to her face in one of her rare community meetings (in a noisy tiny coffee shop) what she is doing about people shooting one another in her district, and all she had was the concerned head-nod. Her aide took notes, said she would follow up, and I heard nothing back.
Born here you may be…but you are probably not around much. Sawant could care less about district 3’s actual problems. I remember her advising D3 residents not to talk to the police after yet another deadly shooting on 21st/Union. This marked the end of my support for the council member.
thanks. best reporting for the area.
recall sawant
Why always that same little stretch along 23rd? Why?
Again and again and again and again. This is not a rhetorical question.
Thanks for following up on this.
Where are the cops? Keeping my kid home from Garfield. She doesn’t want to go either. I might just pull her out, period. Where are the cops? There should be cops there all day every day until they catch this person. Thank you for covering.
There used to be an SRO at Garfield. Seattle Public Schools kicked them out, because yanno, justice.

I would like to point out the rank contradiction between Hart’s message to parents and the reality of the situation as reported here.
Hart: “near the school campus”
SPD: “shell casings near a door on the school’s campus”
Hart: “several gun shots”
SPD: “gunmen had fired around three dozen shots”
Hart: “some students and some staff still at the school”
CHS and reality: “a still busy Garfield High School”
One needs to wonder what Hart’s agenda is in so ludicrously minimizing this event. Does he want to reassure students and families somehow? Yet it appears he has no grasp on the situation, which is not the least reassuring.
This may have went through about five layers at the school district – it came out at 10 pm, many hours after the event, and the tone and minimizing is concerning to me as a parent.
This from the Seattle Times. Sounds like PR to me, how can he say this without backing? “Tim Robinson, a spokesperson for Seattle Public Schools, said no students were believed to have been involved in the shooting and it was not immediately clear if any students witnessed it.” Sounds like garbage without more detail. I don’t trust the school district with my kid’s life.
